Alta Magdalene BirdinGround, 83, of Crow Agency passed away on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017 in the Crow IHS Hospital. Her Crow name, Axpaalia Axpaalakooh, “stays with her medicine” was given to her by her great grandmother.  She was a member of the Ties the Bundle clan.  

She was born on Jan. 30, 1934, a daughter of Genevieve Driftwood and Edward Red Wolf. She was adopted by Ned and Thelma Old Bull and raised by her grandparents, Stephen and Lucy Driftwood on their ranch in Wyola, Montana. She received her education in Wyola, St. Xavier, Busby and Lodge Grass High School.  She continued her education at the UM School of Business and the College of Business in Billings, receiving certificates in business administration from both institutions.  She worked in Crow Agency at various jobs including the Bureau of Indian Affairs and later at the Crow Tribal Housing Authority.  She was a member of the Foursquare Church and Crow Hymns Ministry.

Alta married Glen BirdinGround, Sr. in December of 1964 and the couple made their home in Crow Agency. 

Her parents, grandparents, husband and sons Conrad and Terrence Reed, Marvine “Chico” Takes The Horse, Leland Walking Bear and sisters, Lucy Yellow Mule and Vera White Clay preceded Alta in death.

Survivors include her daughters Glenette (Orrin) Alden, Lucretia (Richard) Takes The Horse and son Glen (Charelle) BirdinGround, Jr.; adopted sons Maurice Mountain Sheep, Tilton (Sarah) Old Bull; step children Lavina Passes, Sara BirdinGround, David and Burton Smith; sisters Arna (Daniel) Takes Enemy, Karen Driftwood, Gloria Good Luck, Patsy, Darlene Harriet, Rhoda and Barbara Driftwood,  Valiebeth Tobacco, Angela Stewart and Harriet (Ettinge) Little Owl; adopted daughters Sheila Rides Horse, Angie (Clayton) Good Luck; brothers  Floyd Morrison,Lawrence Big Hair, Sr., Ronald (Rosaline) Yellowmule, Leo (Aldean) Good Luck and Joe (Lorraine) Bear Cloud; and all her brothers and sisters in Christ.  She always loved to pray for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She always had an open door to friends and family and loved to cook for everyone. The family would like to thank the staff at the Crow Hospital, Billings Clinic and Billings Clinic Dialysis.  

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday at the Crow Agency Spirit of Life Foursquare Church. Interment will follow in the Lodge Grass Cemetery.  Bullis Mortuary is entrusted with the arrangements.
