Alvin Three Irons

On a cold wintery day the 25thof February 2019, we lost our beloved son, father, brother, grandson and nephew, Alvin Gary Three Irons.  His Apsaalooke name was given to him by his late grandpa Sam Birdinground, Jr., Chiishdeaxiibaalasshiash (Ropes with the Grey Horse).  Alvin was 41 years of age and born on July 17, 1977 in Crow Agency, Montana to Joselyn and Clarence Three Irons of Sioux Pass, Lodge Grass.  He graduated from Lodge Grass High School in 1996 where he played football, basketball and high school rodeo; he attended the University of Montana-Western on a rodeo scholarship, then continued at Little Big Horn College, where he received his carpentry certificate.  Alvin was a member of the Big Lodge Clan and a child of Bad War Deed, a member of First Crow Indian Baptist Church, Native American Church, Sundance, Ree Society, and participated in cultural activities as a hot dancer.  Alvin was employed as a ranch hand by various ranches across the reservation and surrounding areas, Westmoreland Coal Mine, Hardin Power Plant, Wrangler Team Roping Championships, and various oil rigs across Montana.  In 1995, he qualified for the High School National Finals Rodeo in the team roping competition with his brother Clayton Three Irons in Gillette, WY where they placed 5thin the event.

Alvin enjoyed watching his sons rope and ride steers, he liked to work with his hands by building sheds, corrals, and other things at his parent’s ranch, a skilled handyman, he loved his kids and enjoyed being with his kids, nieces, nephews, and grandkids. He was an entertainer who liked to make everyone laugh using his good sense of humor, liked to tease, and loved to sing.  An avid rodeo participant in the team roping event as a heeler with the Northern Plains Rodeo Association and Wrangler Team Roping Championships.  He won at the father and son team roping with his son Rope Tie.  Alvin was a believer in God, he gave his life to Christ, and enjoyed listening to “Ride out your Storm,” Jim Felix and John Fogerty.  

Alvin is preceded in death by his brothers; Clarence “Indian” Three Irons, Jr., Shylon Alden, Gary Joe Whiteman, Dana Falls Down and Anfernee Birdinground; his paternal grandparents Louise Birdinground Three Irons and William Three Irons, Sr.; his maternal grandparents Joseph Alden, Sr. and Ruth Backbone Alden; his uncles Belo Alden, Alvin Alden, Ronald Falls Down, William Three Irons, Jr., and Melvin Three Irons, Sr.; his aunties Lavonne Tall Bear and Jacqueline Ware;  his uncle and aunt Aloysious and Ruby Big Hair, and his grandpa Sammy Hoops.

Alvin is survived by his parents; his children, Rope Tie, Katelyn, Nicholis, Blossom, Blessing, Alan Don, Seth, Sidney, Christian, and Kool Trey; his companion Thomasina Cummins from Cut Bank; his brothers  Greg, Cameron (Tena), Clayton, Alan Que, Buster Three Irons, Casey Cummins, Everett “EJ” Storm, Preston Guardipee, Shane (Sherry) Little Bear, Brian T. Our family is large, please excuse us if we have forgotten anyone in our grief.

Funeral Services are scheduled for Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 9:30 am at the Foursquare Spirit of Life Church in Crow Agency, officiated by Pastor David Lopez.  Burial will follow at the Lodge Grass Community Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary is entrusted with the arrangements.
