Benjamin Arthur Big Man, Jr.

November 9, 1950 – September 10, 2020

Benjamin “Ben” A. Big Man, Jr. went home to his Lord and Savior on September 10, 2020 with his family by his side.  Ben was born on November 9, 1950 to Arthur and Hannah (Morrison-Alden) Big Man in Hardin, Montana.  His Crow name Alaawuusua Aascheesh ( Great Knowledge of the Sweat Lodge) was given to him by the late Joe Ten Bear. He was a member of the Greasy Mouth Clan and child of Peigan Clan. He was a life long member of the St. Xavier Mission Catholic Church and for the last 20 years he carried the cross every Good Friday from St. Xavier Mission Church to St. Dennis Hall in Crow Agency.  

Ben attended school at Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota and graduated from high school in 1970.  He loved horses and participated in many high school rodeos. He enlisted in the U.S Army and received his discharge in 1971.  He married Aldora Stops in Sheridan, Wyoming in 1974 and the couple made their home in St. Xavier, Montana.  The couple have two children Emma Big Man and Alvin Big Man.  Ben attended saddle schools in White Wood, South Dakota, Spokane, Washington and Miles City, Montana learning the leather trade.  He was well known for his leather works including handmade belts, horse bridles and chaps. He also repaired saddles for horsemen in the area.  

He is preceded in death by his parents, his paternal grandparents Max and Cordelia (Spotted Tail) Big Man, Sr. and his maternal grandparents Fred Alden and Maude (Prairie Bird) Sr.; his sister Jocelyn Big Man; his brothers Fred Alden III and Gary Plenty Buffalo, Sr., his uncle Fred Alden Jr.; his aunt Ruth Alden and his nephews Travis and Timothy Big Man.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, his daughter Emma Big Man and his son Alvin Big Man; his grandchildren Emmi (Robin) Not Afraid, Stephen “Herc” Not Afraid, Houston and Kai Matthews; his great grandchildren Blake, Austin Moon, Cherish and Princess Mila; his brothers Alden “Poncho” Big Man, Sr. and Pat (Carol) Alden, Sr.; sisters Marie (Buddy) Rogers, Ferrell White Hip, Colleen Black Eagle, Cordelia (Gary Dean) Little Light, Susan (Aaron) Red Star, Nita Big Man and Jana Alden; his aunts Beverly Big Man, Sandra Grant, Dorcella and Patsy Little Light; and his grandmother Caroline Miller. His extended family includes Lone Bear, Alden, Bear Quiver, Morrison, Big Day, Yarlott, Walks, Knows the Ground, Snell, Dancing Bull, Hugs, Jackson, Morning, Goes Ahead, DeCrane, Plain Bull, Red Wolf, Laforge, Iron, Bear Cloud, Carpenter, Old Horn, Bear Crane, Brown and Ten Bear.

Graveside committal services will be held Wednesday September 16, 2020 at the Crow Agency Cemetery at 10:00 a.m.  Bullis Mortuary is entrusted with the arrangements.
