Bernice Wegner, 80, of Hardin, passed away peacefully on Dec. 17, 2018 with her family by her side at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings, MT.
Bernice was born in Dunmore, MT on Dec. 6, 1938 to Ernestine and John Schneider. She attended Nine Mile School north of Hardin, one room, one teacher from 1st thru 8th grade. Bernice married Harvey Jim Wegner on Nov. 6, 1955. They had two sons, Terry (Teresa) Wegner and Steven Lyne (Kathy) Wegner. She has four grandchildren, Stephanie (Jeremy) Stewart and Sara Wegner of Billings, Matt (Christy Moore) Wegner of Las Vegas, NV and Steven (Jillian) Wegner of St. Xavier; six great grandchildren; Malachi and Maddox Stewart Aunake and Jori Wegner, Carson and Harper Wegner.
1955 Bernice and Harvey lived south of Hardin where Harvey worked on a farm for his uncle Eddy Kuck. In 1959 they moved to Babb, MT where Harvey worked on road construction. Shortly after they moved back to Hardin and Harvey worked for Bob Downs driving the Trans Alaska Freight trucks. In 1960 they moved south of Hardin where Harvey worked on a farm for Herman “Butch” Koch. In 1966 the family moved to Pass Creek, MT again working on Butch Koch’s farm for a short time. Another move in 1966, north of Hardin where they famed on her uncle Fred Schmidt’s farm until 1971. In 1971 the family moved just outside of Crow Agency where Bernice worked as a fry cook at Shake and Burger Hut for 4 years and Harvey worked on road construction. From there they moved to Shepherd, where Harvey worked on a farm for Larry Dorn. On Dec 2, 1983 they lost their son Steve in a tragic accident. A parent’s worst nightmare, leaving a huge hole in all our lives, never being the same without him. He left behind two little girls and a wife, but life went on. Again Harvey purchased his own semi truck and began hauling coal and grain from 1983-1987. In 1987, they moved to St. Xavier where Harvey worked with his son Terry on the farm. You might say they never let any grass grow under their feet! After her husband passed away in 1994, only 58 years young, Bernice moved to Hardin where she lived out her life for 24 years.
Bernice will be remembered for her kind, gentle spirit and warm heart. She was a wife, mom, grandma and homemaker all her life. An excellent cook and always kept an immaculate home. She loved her grandchildren, enjoyed gardening when she could, reading and watching tv.
Her parents, her beloved son Steve, her husband Harvey and half brother Robert Schneider preceded Bernice in death.
Survived by her brother Roy (Sheila) Schmidt of Boise, ID, half sister Luella Fox and Arlene Heitzman, numerous nieces and nephews.
