Bertha Marie Nomee

Bertha Marie Not Afraid Nomee went home to be with her Lord and Savior on February 2, 2018. She was born in Crow Agency, Montana on January 9, 1948 to Edward and Ethel (Morrison) Not Afraid Sr. She was given her Indian name Anaakaa itche (Leads Good) by the late Jiggs Yellowtail. She grew up in the Lodge Grass area and graduated from Lodge Grass High School in 1966. She attended Bacone Business College and completed her accounting and bookkeeping degree at the Billings Business College. Her first employment was under the Pat Stand’s Administration as a clerk, she went on to work for the Crow Tribal Housing Authority as a bookkeeper.  She then assumed a position with the BIA Reality Department.  Later she worked for the Crow Tribal Payroll Department before returning to the Housing Authority.  She was currently employed with the Crow Coal Reclamation Office under the Not Afraid Administration. She was an avid basketball fan and proudly supported the Lodge Grass Indian teams throughout her life.

She married Paul Nomee Jr in Sheridan, Wyoming on August 18, 1975, they made their home in Sioux Pass at the base of the Wolf Mountains and raised their children and grandchildren there. Bertha was a member of the Piegan Clan and child of the Greasy Mouth. Her home was always open to whomever needed a place to stay.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sisters Gail Red Wolf, Georgia Little Nest, Shirley Iron Horse and Melvina Jefferson; her brother, Joe Alden; her grandchildren who she raised as her own; Leslie “Frank” Nomee Jr and Denise Nomee; her uncle, Arthur Plenty Hawk, Sr. and aunt, Mary “Babe” Carpenter.  She is survived by her sons; Leslie (Shannon) Nomee, Sr, Dee (Valenna) Nomee, Robert (Lynn) Brien, Jr, Bill Old Crow, John (Whitney) Little Nest, Cyril (Jana) Not Afraid, Edward (Tammy) Not Afraid III, Gabriel Stewart, Harold (Debbie) Back Bone, Elroy (Kitty) Nomee, Randy (Valyn) Not Afraid, TJ Jefferson, Francis (Carlena), Josh (Valerie), and Willie Springfield; her daughters; Hannah (Thomas) Smart, Joselyn Nomee, Marcia Not Afraid, Christina (Dale) Birdinground, Janice (Thomas) Morning, April Toineeta, Kaylene (Orland) Little Light, Joanna (Dean) Blaine, Beth (Earl) Old Chief, Mary Springfield and Loretta (Buffy) Gros Ventre; her grandchildren whom she raised as her own; Tevan, Lessa, Paul (Tia) and Paulie Nomee; her brothers Edward “Artie” Not Afraid, Jr, Alvin (Ladonna Laverdure)  Not Afraid Sr., Aaron (Althea) and Alvin (Lucille) Yarlott; her sisters Adella Spotted Horse, Lorraine (Joseph) Bear Cloud Sr., Berthina Nomee, Magdeline Bonko, Delmyrna Yarlott, Rosela (Garrett) Stewart, Marcia (Benito) Brown, Tori (Oliver) Half, Rhea (John) Chief Child, Clara Buck Elk, Joselyn (Clarence) Three Irons, Anita (Dana) Old Coyote, Laurie and Frances Alden; her aunts Carolyn Morrison and Agatha House; her  special friends  Laura Rose Little Owl, Francine Small, Patsy (Stevie) White Hip, and Te-Atta Old Bear; her grandchildren  Sage, Raston, Francis, Terrina, Sami, Zoey, Tavia, William, Jr., Karson, Paula, Frances, Paige, Saphara and Ben and her great grandchildren; Frank, Amelia and Talissa. Her extended family includes the Morrison, Hugs, Humphrey, Old Horn, Goes Ahead, DeCrane, Alden, Carpenter, Not Afraid, Back Bone and Pretty On Top families and a descendent of the Morrison, Williamson Yarlott, Medicine Crow families as well as a direct descendent of Irene Not Afraid Yellowtail. 

Please bear with us in our time of grief if we have forgotten any family members. Bertha was blessed with a large and extended family. The family appreciates the love, support, and prayers sent our way.
