Cordelia Iva Shane, 73, went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 5, 2021 at the Billings Clinic. She was born June 14, 1948 to Robert Half, Sr. and Lorena Morning in Crow Agency, Montana. She was fondly known by her middle name Iva. Her Indian name Apsaálookbiia (Crow Woman) given to her by great grandfather Jack Stewart. She was a member of the Piegan Clan and a child of the Bad War Deeds Clan. She was a raised in the St. Xavier area by her paternal grandmother Marie Longtail Half. She attended the St. Xavier Public School and the St. Xavier Mission School. She attended Hardin High School and finished her CNA Training at the United Tribes College in Bismarck, North Dakota. She worked at the Public Health Hospital in Crow Agency until her grandmother had a stroke and she assumed the responsibility of her care.
Iva was a talented seamstress. She made elk tooth dresses for her grandchildren and others in the area. She helped her family members with sewing projects usually supervising the cutting of the cloth and buckskin for the elk tooth dresses. She was well known for her beadwork and her pieces are family heirlooms. Iva was the family historian who lovingly shared her knowledge of Crow Traditional Ways and family relationships. She was a wealth of information for all of her family members who came to her for guidance and wisdom. She was honored to be called upon to give Indian names to family members. She loved to go to the mountains with her family. She was an accomplished horsewoman. She competed as a barrel racer and owned and trained her own horses. She married Rudolph Shane in 1971 and the couple were never separated until his death in 2019. The couple made their home Garryowen where they raised horses and their seven children. The couple trained their racehorses and traveled the racehorse circuit enjoying these times together. They always had their children with them on their travels.
She is preceded in death by her husband Rudolph, her parents Robert and Lorena; her grandparents John and Marie Half and Paul and Nancy Morning; her daughter Brenda Half and her adopted daughter Gladys Takes Horse; her granddaughter who she raised Corena Old Elk; her grandchildren Danni Rose Half, Sethalee Little Owl and Uttekaat Birdinground; her sisters Mary Jane Birdinground, Ruby Big Hair, Mary Hoops, Marie Half, Monte Ann Iron, Darlene Bixby; her brothers Lucky Costa Coyote Runs, Danny Boy, Jasper, Ettings, Robert,Jr., Poncho Half and Willie Plainfeather; her aunts Carol Bullinsight, Rita Snell, Sadie Plainfeather, Judith Jefferson, Daisy Old Dwarf, Irma Hoops; her uncles Victor, Benedict and Robert Morning, Sr., her brother in law Isaac Birdinground.
Iva is survived by her daughters Annie (George) Couture, Rena House, Jennifer (Sarge) He Does It, Christina Turns Plenty, Gina (Alex) Reed, Nicole Half and Roberta Birdinground; her sons Michael and Rudolph (Kitty Backbone) Jr. Shane, Cameron and Jess and Jeff Half; her took and raised her grandchildren as her own Joshua (Bridget) Longtail, Lyle and Tyrone Old Elk, Rayna Longtail and Misty Old Elk; her adopted sons Jacob Morning and Cal Leider; her sisters Carlotta Half, Corliss (Clinton) Iron, Michelle (Johnny) Wilson, Sharon (Roger) Roehl, Nicole Cadena Bowles, Lucy (Shawn) McCraigie, Cecelia Big Lake, Tina Pretty on Top, Ruby (Dave) Peterson, Donna Jefferson, Geraldine Big Day, Sandy Medicine Horse, Mary Big Day , Elsie Half, Ann and Jocelyn Costa, Jessica (Steve) Yapunich, Roberta Spotted Horse, Alfredine Takes Enemy, Annie Snell, Mary (Tom Wartenslaben), Janice Snell, Beverly (Ron) Grambling, Teresa (Dan) Brien, Kay Tobacco, Victoria (Myron) Falls Down, Kathleen White Clay, Minerva (Mike) Tucker, Iris Jackson, Bonnie (Hollace) Big Lake, Beatrice (Gabriel) Fettiec, Clarene (John) Degroot and Jackie Morsette; her adopted daughters Janna (CJ) Not Afraid, Zandee Shane, Nancy and Danette Half; her brothers Greg (Dorcella) Half, Kenny Ward and Oliver (Tori) Half , Paul and Curtis Morning, Tim (Ella) Plainfeather, John Bullinsight III, Donovan (June) Bullinsight, Jerome (Kathy) Dancing Bull, Henry (Alfreda) Reed, Zig Jackson, Jigs Morning; her aunts Edith Reed, Tana Olyette, Leda Falls Down, Avis, Lana, Rachel, Darla and Valerie Three Irons; her uncles Art Alden, Dexter (Rosann) Falls Down and Clifford (Ardith) Birdinground; her special nephew Spike Birdinground. She was blessed with many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her door was never locked and all were welcomed into her home. She kept blankets in her living room for anyone who needed a place to sleep. Her extended family include the Half, Long Tail,, Good Luck, Takes Gun, Fog In the Morning, Black Hawk, Bull Tail, Dancing Bull, Jackson, Meyers, Stevenson, Sylvester, Hawks, Hoops on the Forehead, Falls Down, Big Man, Wallace, Walks, Black Eagle, Real Bird. Our family is large if we have missed you please accept our apology.
Funeral services will be Friday July 9, 2021 at the Crow Revival Center in Crow Agency, Montana at 11:00. Interment will follow in the Crow Agency Cemetery.
