Duane Neil Costa III, 23 of Garryowen passed away November 12, 2019 in Garryowen.  Alaka’luua Kon Da’kkatalesh, (Winner in home stretch) a name given to him by his grandfather Trunson Big Hair.  He was born in Hardin  on July 22, 1996, a son of Duane Neil Costa Jr and the late Dennell Big Hair, he was adopted by his grandparents Dennis and Nora Big Hair.  He was a member of the Ties the Bundle Clan and was a child of the Whistling Water Clan.  His God parents are Scott and Debbie Russell of Garryowen.

Duane received his elementary education in Crow Agency and Ronan. He attended Hardin High School and Riverside Indian School in Anadarko, Oklahoma.  While in high school, he excelled in cross country at Ronan and track at Riverside Indian School.

Duane respected the clan system which often included him feeding or giving away to his clan aunt or uncle for prayer when he was ready to compete.  He had a witty personality and loved to tease.  He always loved to tell animated stories with his brothers Devin and Marshall.  He and Marshall were inseparable, they were always getting into mischief together from early childhood  into their adult years. During his spare time, Duane was always outside working among horses with his brothers by his side. His dad and uncles inspired him through their interactions with horses from yearlings to finished five year olds. His baby daughter, Kaycee, was his pride and joy and he loved spending precious moments with her.

Duane found his love for Indian Relay when he first rode and competed at a District Rodeo in Pryor taking first place in the Shetland Relay Race. He also took an interest in steer riding as a young teen. He was an avid horseman who knew how to halter break and train horses. He became an outstanding rider and was well known for his horsemanship.  Duane was always a spontaneous character never afraid to try something new; like galloping Indian relay horses in the  dark or  riding in the horse trailer along with the horses. He was always quiet, content and had a smile on his face. Duane was the rider for Blanket Bull Relay Team, often traveling to Oklahoma, Minnesota, Washington, Idaho, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming and all over Montana to compete in Indian Relay races.  Duane was an outstanding Indian Relay Rider, his first win was during the Annual Crow Fair 2017 Teepee Capital of the World.
