Edward Not Afraid, Jr.

LODGE GRASS — Edward “Artie” Not Afraid, Jr., 81, of Lodge Grass, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 4, 2020 of natural causes.

Looks at his Horses “Isaashke Ikaash” was born July 7, 1938, in Crow Agency, a son of Edward Not Afraid, Sr. and Ethel Morrison. He grew up in the Lodge Grass area, receiving his education at Lodge Grass High School participated in Baseball, Basketball, Track, and Football.

He married Shirley Ann Bird Faraway on January 16, 1957 in Lodge Grass. The couple made their home at Sioux Pass Ranch east of Lodge Grass. He was a member of the Pentecostal Church, received his salvation under the ministry of the late Harold Carpenter; Artie was a member of the Peigan Clan and child of the Greasy Mouth.
He enlisted in the US Marine Corps with his uncle Sonny Pretty On Top in 1957 and was Honorably Discharged in 1960. After his military career he participated in the Relocation Program and moved to Chicago, Illinois; after the program he moved back to Montana and ran his farming, ranching and trucking business at Sioux Pass Ranch; he also worked at the Sugar Beets Factory. He started his political career during the Edison Real Bird Administration under different administrations he held various positions, Director of Natural Resources, Energy Assistance, CHR as an advisor. Later he held the position as Crow Tribal Chief Judge, also was a Police Officer. He also belonged to the Northwest Cowboy Ranch Association, was part of CB Club in Wyoming, his Handle was “Sioux Pass”. He was very generous in giving of his time and monetary gifts as he supported Pentecostal ministries and churches.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, his parents, daughter Adell, son George; sisters Adella Spotted Horse, Melvina Jefferson, Shirley Iron Horse, Gail Red Wolf, Bertha Nomee, Georgine Little Nest, uncles Cyril, Cedric, Leo and Joe Jr. Not Afraid and Arthur Plenty Hawk, brother Greeley Not Afraid, and his grandchildren Wayne and Leo Not Afraid.
Survivors include his children Wayne (Cathy), Alvin, Marcia, Edward (Tammy) III, CJ (Jana), Ethel (Alex), Eliza, AJ (Deneen), Janice (Henry), Joy, Cindy (Melvin), Christina (Dale), Jordale, Princess, Knute (Darreldlene) Old Crow, Carlton (Loretta) Nomee Jr., Robert Jr., Charlene (Don) Gambler Brown. His sisters Lorraine (Joseph) Bear Cloud Sr., Magdaline Bonko, Rosaline (Garrett) Stewart, Delmryne Yarlott, Marcia (Benito) Brown, Tori (Oliver) Half. His brothers Alvin Oliver (Lucille), Aaron (Althea) Yarlott, Dennis (Mavis) Chief Moon; his aunts Caroline Mountain Sheep and Agatha (Bruce) House and sisters-in-law Faith and Karen.
He was blessed with 80 grandchildren; 118 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; as well as members of his extended family including the Not Afraid, Morrison, Red Wolf, Yarlott, Plain Feather, Hugs, Humphrey, Alden, Backbone, DeCrane, Goes Ahead, Iron and Old Horn
Artie is a descendant of Pretty On Top, Looks At The Top, Medicine Tail, Don’t Mix, Plenty Hawk, Buffalo Well Known, Shoots His Foot and Irene Not Afraid Yellowtail Families.

A Graveside Service will be held Friday, May 8, 2020 at 11am at the Not Afraid Family Cemetery, Sioux Pass in Lodge Grass, Montana.
