Frederick Harding Big Lake

Frederick Harding Big Lake, formally of Pryor, went to the Other Side Camp on October 6, 2019 in Pecos, New Mexico. He was born on January 26, 1961 to Thomas Big Lake and Clara (Strong Enemy) Big Lake. His Crow name Oolapuush (Discovered for His Knowledge) was given to him by Dale Old Horn. He was a member of the Big Lodge and child of the Bad War Deeds clans. He grew up in Pryor and attended Pryor Elementary School. He graduated from Plenty Coups High School in 1979. In high school, he participated in basketball. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Santa Fe Institute for the Arts in 2009 where he studied American Indian Art. He was a talented artist and received many awards for his sculptures and paintings. He was employed by the Pecos School District and was awarded the Golden Panther Award for his work with students. He made his living in the art world.
He grew up in a traditional home and was a member of the Native American Church and practiced traditional belief ways. He had strong ties to his native culture and participated in Sundance and sweat lodge ceremonies.
Frederick is preceded in death by his parents Tommy and Clara; his brother Thomas, Jr. and sister Fayette; his paternal grandparents James and Edith (White Clay) Big Lake; his maternal grandparents Fred and Elizabeth (Hears Every Way) Strong Enemy, Sr; his adopted brother and high school friend, Grady Hunts the Arrow, Jr.
He is survived by his domestic partner, Tammy; his sons Blaine (Candace) and Tomas Big Lake; his daughters Fallon, Elizeta, Angelique and Santana Big Lake; his grandchildren Kobe, Kodi, Cedric, Kennedy, Jasmine and an expected grandson; his sisters Tammy (Chris) Dillon, Crystal Smart Enemy and adopted sister Sharon Rides Horse; his brothers John Big Lake and Barney Smart Enemy; his adopted parents Grady and Alice Hunts the Arrow; his aunts Clarice (Spencer) Denny, Loretta Three Irons and Myra Left Hand; his uncle Fred Strong Enemy, Jr.; his Tobacco Society adopted sisters Julie Ann Wilkinson, Roberta Snell Spotted Horse, Veronica Big Day, Sheri Chandler, Iris Heavy Runner and Peri Shenderline. His extended family includes Big Lake, White Clay, Shane, Lincoln, Rides Horse, Old Horn, Old Coyote, Strong Enemy, Hears Every Way, Hawk, Hill and Big
Hair. He was a direct descendent of Chief Pretty Eagle, Chief Twined Tail and Chief Unfallen Bull.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday October 15th at 10:00 am at St. Charles Catholic Church in Pryor with burial to follow in the Strong Enemy Family Cemetery. Rosary will be recited on October 14th at 3:00 pm at the Bullis Funeral Chapel.
