Jeffery C. Jefferson, Sr.

Jeffery Charles Jefferson, Sr., 61 of Lodge Grass, born May 7, 1957 to Raymond and Ione Healy Jefferson, Sr., went home to be with his Lord and Savior on August 19, 2018. As a child he was raised by his grandparents the late Lester and Mary Jefferson Sr.  He graduated from Lodge Grass High School in May 1977.  In high school he excelled in basketball and football.  Jeffery was well known for his long-range shooting; he may have held the 3-point record, if there was a 3-point line at the time.

He married his high school sweetheart, Cheryl Old Bull on Oct. 21, 1978 and the couple made their home in Lodge Grass, where they raised their five children. Jeff was a member of the Crow United Full Gospel Church (Carpenters Church) Lodge Grass and held a seat on the Board of Directors.

He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Sarpy Coal Mine after graduating high school. During the summer month’s he was a wildland fire fighter. He later worked for the Crow Tribal Head Start Programs as a bus driver and a custodian for the Lodge Grass High School. He received his CDL-Driver’s License from Sage Trucking and started his career for the Montana Department of Transportation where he retired after 20 years. No matter what sort of employment he held, he made sure he provided for his family.   

He was known to tease and crack jokes with everyone he encountered including his sister-in-laws, especially Regina Gros Ventre. He was his grandkids’ #1 fan, following them all over the western states to various tournaments. He was a big Lodge Grass Indians fan, Crow Cowgirls fan, Chicago Bears fan and Cleveland Indians fan. He was known to encourage his children, nephews, nieces and grandchildren. They were keen to his distinct whistle.

He is preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Ione Jefferson Sr., his brother Larry Dean Jefferson, Grandparents Mary and Lester Jefferson Sr., Uncles Charles, Benedict, Lester Jr., Warren Sr., Calvin Sr., Wesley Sr. Jefferson. Aunts Starr Stops and Judith Big Lake. Nephew Victor Nomee Jr.  

Survivors include his wife of 39 years Cheryl, his children Thomas Sr. (Tracy), Missy (Clint), Jeffery (Amica), Azurene (Krysta) and Larry Dean. Brothers Dave (Lilly), Raymond, Arnold (Coretta), Calvin (Rebecca) Jefferson, Cyrus (Annie) Leider Sr., Chipper (Janet) Fitzpatrick, George Pretty Weasel, Darren (Shelly) Charges Strong, Darren, Ricky and Brian Renville.  Sisters Judy Jefferson, Fray (Carlos) Nomee, Junetta (Donald) Gardner, Sheila (Russell) Wallace, Leda Falls Down, Connie (Bruce) Russell and Melissa (Sonny) Falls Down Jr., Letha (Dan) Gun Shows, Denise Nomee, Evelyn Jefferson, Dorothy North Peigan, Verena Costa, Rebeka Stovall, Lydia (Dean) Hill, Jennifer Jefferson and Leeann Old Bull. Aunts Carol Renville and Laura Pickett; grandchildren Tia (Josiah), Tommi Ann, Tawny, Thomas Jr “Tomcho”, Jordan, Dani, Jeffery III “Jech Ja Bah”, Isaiah “Izay”, Xavier “X-Man”, Darrian (Zeruiah) Backbone, Kingston Hugs, Kendell Russell, Trevonna Reed, Shantel and Tyressa Pretty On Top. Also survived by his namesake Elisha Jeffery and he was cherished by his nieces and nephews that he took as his own and was affectionately known by them as “Daddy Jeff,” Ricky, Casiraye, Cowboy, Caroleann, DJ, Megan, Lyndzee, Louie, Sonny Bono, Rayedawn, Vivica, Edson, Tjay, Clyde, Shekinah, Cameron and Bruce. Extended Families include the Jefferson, Carpenter, Hunts the Arrow, LaForge, Little Owl, Goes Ahead, Charges Strong, Pickett, Bear Below and Moccasin families.

Funeral service Friday August 24, 2018 at 10:00 AM at the Spirit of Life Foursquare Church in Crow Agency. Burial in Lodge Grass Cemetery.
