Lonnie Bruce Shield, Sr., 51, of Benteen, Montana (From the Hill of the Champions) passed away September 5, 2021 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings, Montana. He was born in Crow Agency, Montana to Myron and Sandra (Plentyhoops) Shield. He was given his Indian name (Iisaxchiiisahiikashe (Swift Hawk) by John Holds the Enemy, Sr. Lonnie was a Bad War Deeds and a child of Whistling Water. He was also a direct descendent of Chief Pretty Eagle. On the Lakota side, he was a descendent of Knife Chief. Lonnie was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church.
Lonnie attended school at the Crow Agency Public School and then to Hardin Middle School. While in middle school, he took an interest in cross country and basketball. He continued at Hardin High School where he was on the Championship Cross Country Teams in 1985 and 1989. He graduated in 1989. After graduation, he attended Haskell Indian Nation University.
While growing up he was considered a jack of all trades. He was a champion grass dancer and was given the right to be a Whistle Carrier by Steve Charging Eagle. Lonnie was also a jockey, a bull rider and played hand games. He and his brothers were Champion Reno Cowboys and he was the Best Guesser. Guessing rights were given to him by John Holds, Jr. Lonnie was an arrow thrower and was given the color green by Pius Crooked Arm. While on the powwow trail, with his adopted family, the Goodwills, he met his future wife, Janna Roan at the Saddle Lake Powwow. The couple had four children Robin Dorothy, Eleisha Laketa, Laramie Wade and Lonnie Bruce Jr.
Lonnie is preceded in death by his wife Janna; son Laramie Wade; his grandchildren Marie Morrison and Mila Enick; his maternal grandparents David and Dorothy Jefferson, David Plenty Hoops; his paternal grandparents Amos and Dora Young Dog; maternal aunt Gladys Jefferson and uncle Howard Shane; paternal aunt Irene Young Dog; paternal uncles Verdell, Lester, Seymour Sr. and Gary Young Dog.
Lonnie is survived by his children Robin (Robin E), Eleisha, Lonnie Bruce Jr.; his grandchildren Jaelon, Mekwan, Garland, Kenneth Jr., Lamia, Videl, Lucas, Janna-Lynn and Windy; his parents Myron and Sandra Shield, Sr.; his brothers Myron Jr. “Jojo” (Michelle) and Jeremy (Robin) Shield, Kenny Boy (Joann) Shane, Lenny Hale (Paula) Plenty and Acorn (Stasia) Holds the Enemy ; his sisters Kaylene, Jovana, Melissa (Marcus) Janel and Powwow, Hattie Sue, Iris and Dora; uncles Kenneth (Fannie), Vivian, Colleen (Eugene) and numerous nieces and nephews. His extended family includes Plenty Hoops, WhiteClay, White Fox, Spotted Horse, Holds the Enemy, Door, Big Shoulder, Young Dog, Around Him, Iron Cloud and Knife Chief.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday September 9, 2021 at 10:00 am at the St. Dennis Catholic Church in Crow Agency with interment to follow in the Hardin Fairview Cemetery. Rosary will be recited at 4:00 pm at the Crow Multi-Purpose Building with a wake to follow. Visitation will be at the Multi-Purpose Building at 10AM Wednesday.
