Maretha Marie Risingsun Charette

Maretha Marie Risingsun Charette, Red Paint Woman, Ma’etomona’e, mother, wife, sister, aunt, grandma, friend made her journey on April 11, 2018.  She was a direct descendent of Chief Dull Knife.

She was born August 5, 1938 in Busby, MT, to Oliver and Elizabeth Risingsun.  She was raised in Busby and lived there the majority of her life.  She attended school at Busby and after graduation she attended Mokahum in MN for two years, and went on and taught Bible Study in Hammond, OK. 

On December 1, 1961, she married the love of her life, John Hubert Charette, in Sheridan, WY and from this union they had two boys and a daughter.  She also had a special friend that would accompany her, Arlene Gray.

Maretha worked as dorm matron for 19 years in Busby and moved on to being a CHR for 17 years, working throughout the reservation communities.  She touched many lives in both of her jobs, as a matron she was mom to many kids whom she helped raise; and became friends with all whom she served as a CHR.

Maretha was an avid Cheyenne Speaker who could read and write the Cheyenne Language.   She was also a member of the Cheyenne Singers of the Mennonite Church who sang Cheyenne Hymns.  This group was called upon for many special occasions to share their music for many celebrations.

Maretha is survived by her children John Oliver (Debra) Charette, Michael Orelup (Winnie) and Iris Buffalo, her grandkids: Tracy (Diane) Charette, Kristin (Asa) Driftwood, Tommy (Brandy) Charette, JoniKay Charette, D. Taylor Charette, Virgil “Slim” Buffalo, Dani Buffalo and CJ Stump and 30 great grand kids and 2 great great grand kids.  One adopted son, Lonnie Flatness.  Her special sister cousins:  Jeannie Strangeowl and Marie Littlewolf.  In-laws:  Raymond and Susie DeLorme, Ramona and Chuck Klien, Jackie and Tyne Cartwright, Earl and Maria Charette, Carmen Cymbal, Jiggs and Bernadette Charette, Floyd Fisher and Sylvia Risingsun; her nieces Daneeta and Elizabeth Fisher and Aryn Kaline a special granddaughter.

Maretha made roll call at the Charging Horse Casino weekly with her buddies, Connie Brien, Susie Wilsey, Lorraine Robinson, Geraldine Fisher and Stewart Fisher and the Bingo Staff.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings:  Orelup Risingsun, Teddy Risingsun, Collins Risingsun, Louise Fisher, grandson Yancey James Charette and son-in-law Virgil Buffalo.

She was strong but her body was tired, she said she was ready to go and see her loved ones.  She told her sons “I am ready and I know where I am going, I am not scared.”

We would like to thank the staff at St. Vincent’s Healthcare and ER staff at Crow Hospital for everything they did for our Mom.

Extended Family include: Risingsun, Flying,  Killsontop, Littlesun, Russell, Onebear, Seminole, Strangeowl, Big Back, Sooktis, Littlewhiteman, Limpy, Elkshoulder, Sioux, Spottedwolf, Littlewolf, Buffalo, Littlebear, Wolfname, Charette, Charging Horse Casino Staff.  Maretha has a very large family and we tried to remember everyone, if we have forgot anyone please forgive us.

Wake service will be Sunday evening at the Busby Mennonite Church and funeral service at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 16, 2018. The meal will be served at Busby School Cafeteria after the burial at Hardin Fairview Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary has been entrusted with the arrangements.
