Morris Big Lake

Morris Big Lake, Jr. left to the Other Side Camp on April 19, 2021.  He was born March 22, 1964 in Crow Agency, Montana to Morris Big Lake, Sr.  and Lavern Williamson. His Indian name Heeleenbaaátchilash (Fortunate Among the Others) was given to him by Gale Three Irons, Sr. Morris was a member of the Piegan Clan and a child of the Bad War Deeds Clan.  Morris learned the cowboy way of life from his grandfather/dad Dexter Williamson, Jr. and his uncle Melvin Paul Williamson, Sr. 

He grew up in the Lodge Grass area and attended school in Lodge Grass.  He earned his Heavy Equipment Operator’s Certificate and worked at various construction jobs.  He was also a skilled carpenter.  He married the love of his life, Cecelia Reed in Hardin in 1994 and the couple made their home south of Hardin.  They were blessed with six children Leah, Edith Keishia and Tymer Mo, Chase Williamson, Heather Rides the Horse and Sunny Round Face.  

Morris loved the life of a cowboy riding and breaking horses. He met everyone with a smile and was a kind and caring husband, father, son, brother and friend. He was a great barterer and was known for making the best trades. Morris was a fluent Crow speaker and was proud of his traditional Crow customs.  He held his late father- in- law, Sonny Joe Reed, in great respect and valued the lessons he learned from him.  Morris was raised in the Pentecostal Church and later converted to the Catholic Church. He participated in Peyote Meetings, the Sundance and Sweat Lodge Ceremonies as a member of the Native American Church. He respected all religious beliefs.   

He is preceded in death by his father Morris Big Lake, Sr. his paternal grandparents James and Edith (White Clay) Big Lake, his maternal grandparents Dexter and Lorraine (Morrison) Williamson, Jr.; his grandmother Alice Mae White Clay Laforge; his father in law George  Reed, his brothers in law George and Crawford Reed and Dean Pretty on Top; his Godmother Laura He Does It;  his uncles Garlon, Melvin and  Virgil Williamson, Arlin Stewart, Thomas, Delbert, Archie and Vernon Big Lake; his aunts Ramona Left Hand, Jeanean Turns Plenty, Dorothy M. Hair, Marcella and Lorraine Big Lake,  Olive Yarlott and  Ada Horn; his sisters Rena Pickett,  Sharon Stands and Lorett and Antionette Big Lake; his brothers  Gary Big Lake, Emerson Pickett and Joseph Buffalo, Jr. ; his special nephews he grew up with Ruben Stewart Todd and Allen Old Elk.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Cecelia; his children Heather Rides the Horse, Leah Ryder, Edith Keishia and Tymer Mo Big Lake  and Sunny Round Face;  his mother Lavern Williamson; his grandmother Veronica White Clay; his grandchildren Kai, Maliyah, Kiel, Jr. Gray and Liam Parker, Nechia and Nishan House, Landen Real Bird and Curtis Rides Horse III; great granddaughters Aubribella and Aunalise White Wolf; his sisters Janet (Elton Backbone), Maria Pretty Weasel and Edie Big Lake, Gloria (Porgey) Old Elk, Hannah (Shawn) Fitzpatrick, Kari Covers Up, Leah (Mike) Hill, Tammy (Chris) Dillon, Loretta Stewart, Lavern Takes Horse, Paula (Vernon) Fisher, Rose Williamson his sisters in law Ruby Peterson and  Tina Pretty on Top;  his brothers Chairman Frank (Jade) White Clay, Conklin, Ronnie and John Big Lake,  Kenneth  (Pork Chops) , Harding Turns Plenty, Mark (Rosanna) Denny, Emery and Jade (Tashina) Three Irons, Chase and Straton Williamson, JD Pickett, Champion Takes the Horse, Ron Williamson and Chris Horn; his brother in law Henry Reed, Sr.; his uncles Tom Dooley LaForge and Paul Morning, Sr.; his paternal aunts Clarice (Spencer) Denny, Loretta Three Irons, Myra Left Hand; his maternal aunt Senora Jean Tushka; his nieces Sandra Stands and Marny Old  Elk; his nephews Tatum Pretty On Top, Keen White Wolf, Adrian Stands, Jr., Jon Gary Old Elk, Weston and Todd Weigand and Lamar Backbone.  His extended family include the Morrison, Yarlott, Not Afraid, Williamson, Medicine Crow, Old Horn, Hugs, Goes Ahead, DeCrane, Humphrey, Alden, Fredericks, Hall, White Clay, Big Lake, Shane and the children of Alice LaForge. 

Rosary will be recited Wednesday April 21, 2021 at 3:00 pm at the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday April 22, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Multi-Purpose Building with interment to follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Hardin, Montana.  Bullis Mortuary is entrusted with the arrangements.
