Crow Agency – Annette Couture 88, longtime Crow Agency resident, passed away March 11, 2024, at St. Vincent Hospital.
“Bile Baaxpee” “Mitee huba”“Sacred Water”, was born August 02, 1935, in St. Xavier, a daughter of George and Ruby Good Horse Reed, Sr. She grew up in St. Xavier area, receiving her education at St. Xavier Mission School and later attend Flandreau Indian School in South Dakota. She continued her education at vocational school earning her culinary arts.
Annette married Richard Couture Sr. in 1953 and the made their home in California before returning to Crow Agency Area where she started a café called Crow Lunch, then started working for Indian Health Service and Pretty Eagle Catholic School, retiring in 2002 and moved to Elmo and later returned to Crow Agency after the death of her husband of 55 years.
After passing of her sister Myrtle, she was the Matriarch of the family, we all look to her as our mother. Annette enjoyed traveling and holidays with her family, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. During holidays she would let her daughters and grands help cook but would take over because she said you aren’t doing it right. She had a passion for cooking especially for her family. She enjoyed powwows and dancing and would dance with her sisters on New Year's Pow Wow.
Annette was long time Parish member of St. Dennis Catholic Church in Crow Agency, she became a 3rd Order of Francis of Assisi, and Associate of the Franciscan Sisters. She was a Whistling Water Clan member and child of the Newly Made Lodge.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, aunt Ramona Heart, sons, Darius Couture, George Reed III, Charles Cashen, and Garland Howe, grandsons Garrell Passes, Gareth Reed Jr., Dakota and Newlyn Heart, David Howe, Harlan (Chance) Reed Jr, Thomas Iron, and Gordon Plain Feather, granddaughters, Tammie Cashen, Lissa Couture, Shaylee Walks, sisters Inez Bird in Ground, Myrtle Howe, Rose Ann Reed, and Sylivia Stops, brothers, Harland Reed, Anthony Reed Sr., George Reed Jr, Lloyd Hogan Sr., and great-great granddaughter Maci Iron.
