Randall “Randy” Not Afraid, 50, of Lodge Grass passed away October 9, 2019 at the family home. He was born April 7, 1969 in Phoenix, Arizona to Georgia (Dolly) Moore and the late Gary Paul Not Afraid. His Indian name Akiichí ilhawaseesh (Horse Man) was given to him by Hub Williamson. He was a member of the Newly Made Lodge and a child of Greasy Mouth. At the age of two, the family moved to the ranch on Sioux Pass. He attended school at Lodge Grass and graduated from Lodge Grass High School in 1987. He attended Dawson Community College on a rodeo scholarship.
Randy was from a ranching and rodeo family and his life’s passion was team roping. He was a champion header. He qualified eight times for the Indian National Finals and this year would have been his ninth appearance. Randy loved his children made sure they rode the best horses and always made sure their entry fees were paid.
Randy was a hard worker and was well known for his expertise in the area of furnace installation and maintenance. His friends and family relied on him to keep their furnaces in top condition. He was first a rancher but was currently employed with Warren Transport as a truck driver. He previously worked for the Crow Tribal Housing Authority, Crow Tribal Transportation, Riverside Construction, the Sunlight Ranch and the Jimmy Brown Ranch. Randy was the 2015 Crow Fair Rodeo Manager and took special pride in knowing it was one of the best well-run rodeos ever. Randy is preceded in death by his father Gary Paul Not Afraid; his son Michael Not Afraid; his paternal grandparents Cedric and Julia (Williamson) Not Afraid, maternal grandparents John and Georgianna Moore; his uncles Wayne and Dee Not Afraid; his aunt Irene Not Afraid; and his nephew Chance Salway.
He is survived by his mother Dolly Not Afraid; his companion Valyn Little Wolf; his sons Roddy and Tanner Not Afraid; his daughters Vernice (Terrace) Hugs; Bailey and Baby Julie Not Afraid, Charmayne Bear Claw and Myam Anna Hope Hill; granddaughter Haizley Yazzie; his brothers Mike (Lorri) Not Afraid, Charles (Marilyn) Salway, Dusty Howe, Marty and Jeremy (Roxanne) Not Afraid, John (Erma) Moore; his sisters Dannelle (Rick) Hyatt, Michelle (Alfred) Armajo, Julie ( George) Cummins, April (Cameron) Not Afraid-Tobacco, Alta (Delano) Whiteclay, Kim Not Afraid and Adonnis (Casius) Spears; his uncle Tom (Gloria) Moore; his adopted parents Lloyd and Elvenia Pickett and Panda and Harriet Bad Bear; his nieces and nephews Nicole, Jayme, Jessica, Amanda, Emily, Brandon, Taryn, Braylee, Cedar, Casey, Tawni, Rad, Amica, Miclo, Taylor, Rainey, Maverick, Justin, Shania, Big John, Tyrel, Erin, Cara, Lacey, Wyatt, Courtney, Zane and Sydney. His extended family includes the Not Afraid, Williamson, Yellowtail, Bad Bear, Falls Down, Bonga of Minnesota and all his rodeo and roping families.
Services will be Monday, October 14 at 11:00 AM at the Spirit of Life Foursquare Church in Crow Agency with internment to follow in the Lodge Grass Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary is entrusted with the arrangements.
