Scott Russell, Jr.

Scott Dannon Russell, Baachuuwakakuash (Prays for People) was called home to be with the Creator on July 5, 2019. Scott was born September 5, 1989 in Billings, Montana the first born to Scott and Debbie Russell. He was given his Indian name by the late Barney Old Coyote. He was raised in Garryowen, Montana where he played on the banks of the Little Bighorn River with the “Gtown” crew. A member and child of the Whistling Water Clan, Scott was raised traditional and participated in numerous Sundances, Sweat Lodge and Native American Church ceremonies. He attended schools in Salt Lake City, Crow Agency, Lodge Grass, St. Labre and graduated with the class of 2007 from Hardin High School. He went on to Salish Kootenai College in Pablo, Montana where he played basketball on the SKC Bison National Championship Team. Scott Dannon was full of love and life; special to his heart were his horses and his ranch in Garryowen. He would come home on weekend trips to be with his horses, take a hunting trip to the Bighorn Mountains and go fishing. He loved his family and friends and frequently checked on various family members. Scott’s friendly and respectful demeanor created extended family wherever he went. He lived and worked in Missoula, Pablo and Garryowen and had recently moved back home from Seattle, Washington. He was a skilled craftsman. He was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking, floating on the river, traveling and attending concerts and sporting events. He found enjoyment in whatever job he had and was happy that his skills could take him places to work when there weren’t any jobs at home. He is a descendent of the Chief Society Family of the Northern Cheyenne and the Frozen Clan of the Gros Ventre. 

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Andy and Justine Russell, his maternal grandfathers Gary Horse Capture and Charles Yellow Fox; his uncles Marcus Capture and Gary Capture, Jr. ; his sisters Monique Russell and Hannah Beth Russell. 

He is survived by his parents of Garryowen; his Godparents Charlie and Theresa Stops; his grandmothers Patricia Yellow Fox and Janice, Lena and Ella, Eleanor, Ernestine, Hannah, Andrea Lea, Mary Agnes, Barbara and Elsie; his grandfathers Ricky (Ann) Eugene (Lydia) Birdinground; his brothers Devan (Sunshine), Colton, Wyatt and Andrew; his sisters Shania (Cody), LeFaye Russell, Elena (Chase) Demery, Lenna Russell, Annie Leah Russell, Rosalia Bad Horse, Makayla Fredricks and Annie Leah Darrell (Jessica) Horse Capture; his adopted brothers Dillard and Burdette Joseph (BJ) Birdinground; his adopted sisters Savannah Old Elk and Marley Birdinground; his uncles Corey ( Roberta) Boyd (Charlotte) Russell, George (Theresa) Horse Capture, Jr., Darryl (Jessica) Horse Capture, Leon (Caroline) Pretty Weasel, Larry (Agnes) Pretty Weasel,; his aunts Lisa (Mike) Stevens and Yvonne Bad Horse, Linda (Manuel) Covers Up, Katrina Pretty Weasel, Alda (Louis) Good Luck, and Polly (Manuel) Chase: his special nephews Kyson, Dadriam and Raven; and his nieces Aurora and Braylea. His extended Crow Families include the Birdinground, Other Medicine, Little Light, Real Bird, Medicine Tail, Lincoln, Pretty Weasel and Alden; from the Northern Cheyenne the Spotted Wolf, Seminole and Flying; from the Fort Belknap Horse Capture, Falcon and Gray; from the Fort Berthold Reservation Packineau, Driver and Wolf. If we have forgotten anyone in our grief, please accept our apology.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday July 10th at 10:00 am at St. Dennis Catholic Church with Rosary to be recited on Tuesday July 9th  at 3:00 pm in the Bullis Funeral Chapel with a wake to follow at the Russell Family Ranch in Garryowen at 7:00 pm.  Bullis Mortuary is entrusted with the arrangements.
