William “Bill” Ausmus

On May 29, 2019 William (Bill) D. Ausmus, 102, was reunited with his wife Ruth in heaven.

Bill was born to Hugh and Beulah Ausmus on May 11, 1917 in Sheridan, WY. Because his father was an engineer for the Northern Pacific Railroad, they lived in Parkman, Ranchester and Sheridan.

After graduation from high school in Sheridan, Bill attended the University of Wyoming at Laramie, where he received a degree in Agriculture. Soon he began working for the soil conservation service.

Bill joined the Army and spent his time as an X-Ray technician during World War II. After his time in the service, he moved to Hardin where he met his wife to be, Ruth Egnew. They met at the Methodist Church and after their marriage, September 11, 1949, they spent some time in Choteau, Montana.

In 1959, they moved back to Hardin where Bill worked for the county as a surveyor. He loved his work. He also became a Boy Scout leader, a photographer, a rock collector, a jewelry maker, and above all an ardent worker for and a member of the VFW. He served for over 60 years and was the oldest Veteran in Hardin.

Bill and Ruth enjoyed camping, hiking, fishing, boating and traveling. They loved the Hardin community and were huge benefactors to many causes locally and nationally, giving unselfishly to many people and groups, many times anonymously.

Bill’s father Hugh, his mother Beulah, sister Margaret and wife Ruth preceded his in death. He is survived by  his niece Joan Stempel of Morgan Hill, CA; his nephews Roger Wentz, of Sheridan, WY, Richard of Boulder Creek CA, Robert of Monterey, CA. and Thomas Egnew of Tacoma, WA.

Donations can be made to the Big Horn County Museum.
