Our beloved brother William L Plainfeather unexpectedly passed on July 22, 2020 in Billings, MT. “Willie” as we called him was born on July 28, 1962 in Crow Agency, MT the fifth son of the late Leo and Cecelia Half Plainfeather. His Indian name was Akbuute Baaxpaakuuloosh meaning Brings Back Sacred Moccasins given to him by Marvin Stewart. He was a member of the Catholic Church. He was a member of the Bad War Deeds Clan and a child of Greasy Mouth. He graduated from Hardin High School in 1980. He attended Eastern Montana College and graduated from Montana State University-Bozeman with a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood. Willie held various jobs throughout his life including a store clerk at the Arapaho Ranch, an Instructional Aide and Bus Driver at Pretty Eagle School, he was a teacher at the Hardin Middle School and an advisor to the Odyssey of the Mind Program, was a Juvenile Probation Officer, a Director of the Crow Tribal Social Services Adviser and a Court Counselor with the Crow Tribal Courts.
Willie was admired for his extensive knowledge of Crow Tribal Laws. He was acknowledged for his outstanding achievements while he served as the Big Horn Legislature Representative and Speaker of the House. As the Speaker of the House, he presented and facilitated the passage of many laws. He was a traditional Crow Man and was proud of his knowledge of the Crow culture. Willie lived his life accordingly. He will be remembered for his compassion to everyone he worked with, for his generosity to relatives he took in, he loved every grandchild, and most of all, his passion for raising horses, team roping, hunting and fishing. He had a unique personality; he was well read and could converse with anyone on many topics. He had a great sense of humor and people loved to visit him. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents Leo and Cecelia Plainfeather; his brothers Leo Daniel and John Plainfeather; his sisters Rosemarie Plainfeather, Corliss Provost and Johnanna Yarlott; his adopted sister Germaine Half; his paternal grandparents Alex and Rose (Plenty Good) Plainfeather; his maternal grandparents John and Marie Half; his uncles and aunts Rita (Owen) Snell, Thomas Half, Lee Plainfeather, Merle Plainfeather, Dan and Bobby Half, Arvilla Plain Bull, Ailene Not Afraid, Judy Byrant and Shirley Pickett.
He is survived by one brother Tim Plainfeather and his wife Ella; his sister Pam Birdhat; his son Ricky Jefferson; his aunts Ruby Planfeather, Edith Reed; his uncles Danny and Roland Plainfeather; his nieces Jonalae, Cecelia, Mary, Tima, Deidra, Samantha, Thomasina, Susie and Leona; his nephews Lane and Timothy Logan Plainfeather, Mike Howe , TJ Half and Neal Beaumont; his grandchildren Jacob and Sadie Plainfeather and Jessie Door. If we missed anyone, we apologize as he had many nieces, nephews and grandchildren. His extended families include the Snell, Half, Plainfeather, Old Crow, Whiteclay, Real Bird, Little Owl, Blackhawk, Reed, Plainbull, Iron, Hugs, and Morrison. Pease forgive us if we have missed anyone as we have large families.
Graveside services Monday July 27, 2020 at 10:00 AM at the Hardin Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.
