On Tuesday, November 12, 2019, at sunrise Jesus and His angels were rejoicing and as they welcomed Darrell Frank Bear Cloud to his forever home. In his last days, he saw a glimpse of heaven and shared what he saw with his family, as he smiled and cried. The family was comforted that our beloved and adored husband, father, papa, brother, uncle is witnessing the fruits of his labor and God’s promises to his faithful servant. Darrell was born onJanuary 14, 1954, to Alice Bear Cloud and Thomas Wall in Hardin Montana. He received his Crow name “Awékootaàdaasaasuush “ (Well Known Throughout the Land) by his Grandmother Libby from a prophetic dream that she received.
Darrell resided in Dunmore, Montana where he was raised by his maternal grandparents Elizabeth “Libby” and Otto Bear Cloud. Darrell was a member of The Piegan Clan and a child of the Greasy Mouth Clan. He gave his life to the Lord at an early age and walked in faith his entire lifetime. Although Darrell met his wife years before, when they were children, he finally married his one true love Nellie “Hossie” Messerly on August 6, 1977. With this marriage, he also received the gift of his first son, James “Cricket” Messerly. Darrell and Hossie’s younger siblings spent a lot of time with them and Darrell taught many of them how to hunt, drive and was always there to give guidance and comfort .He was close to his younger brother Larry and his baby sister Christina who he lovingly referred to as Huggy Bear. Darrell was the most unselfish and humble mane and was the perfect example of what a man should be. As a young man he worked on the oil rigs and later as a caretaker at numerous group homes. He loved being a truckdriver as it allowed him to travel throughout the country. He worked as a trucker driver and oiler for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Crow Tribe. While Darrell was working in Arkansas, Hossie went into labor while she was staying with her parents in Lodge Pole Montana. His baby girl Jamie Lynn was born on November 21, 1981 in Havre, Montana. They raised their family in Billings Montana where they both attended college. Darrell earned an AA in Engineering and a BS in Biology fromEastern Montana College. They raised over 75 children in foster care and most kept contact with them as they grew older. They knew that Darrell and Hossie’s home would always be their home. Darrell and Hossie thought they were done raising children but were blessed with Zackary Bear Cloud on November 16, 2003. In addition, they raised multiple nephews and nieces. His grandchildren include Aiyana, Dathan, Isabella, Kiera Ereaux, Lauren, Landen, Dallas, Jayden and Ryan Messerly, Kailani Bear Cloud, Krista, Aubrey, Isaac Fig, and Mae Bad Bear. Although he loved all of his grandchildren, Aiyana, Dathan, Bella and Kiera were blessed to be raised in the same home as their Papa. He had their back through thick and thin. He spent hours holding them and no matter how sick or in pain he was when he saw any of his grandchildren his face lit up and he smiled with so much pride and joy. His best memories were made with his family hunting, fishing, camping, and berry picking.
