Bert Little Owl Obituary

Bert Travis Little Owl, 51 of St. Xavier went home to the other side camp on May 24, 2023. Bert was born November 7, 1971, in Crow Agency, MT to Thomas Little Owl and Iris Eagle Horse. His Crow Indian name is Isshuuii Chiakaatash (White Mane) was given to him by his grandfather, Ettinge, Sr. He was a Ties the Bundle, a child of the Ties the Bundle and was a descendant of Chief Bell Rock.

Bert spent most of his younger years between North Dakota and St. Xavier; then from 8th grade he permanently resided in St. Xavier.  He was raised by his grandfather William until his passing. Then his maternal aunt Philamine Old Coyote raised him until he graduated and continued to live at the family home. He graduated from Hardin High School in 1991 where he excelled in football and made All-Conference. He attended United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Bert married Roberta Stiffarm and was later divorced. He took her sons, Trevor and Canaan Big Hair as his own. He loved them and continued to raise them and enjoyed the outdoors together. He enjoyed the ranch life and never refused to help anyone especially his dad and uncle Larry. He was nicknamed “Lifesaver” by his brothers Larry, Jr. and Larny because of being a reliable, hard worker. He enjoyed hunting, camping, riding, roping, and spending time in the Big Horn Mountains with his brother-in-law, Marlin “Yoyo” Not Afraid.  He also rode as an outrider during many parades with Yoyo. He loved the Denver Broncos and loved watching games with his mom Philamine and cousin Ray. He was everyone’s favorite uncle. He took them swimming at the lake, sledding and made sure he gave gifts to them for their birthdays and Christmas. He was loved by many, and only good words were said about him. He will be remembered for his smile, humbleness and being a kind man. He loved to tease his sisters-in-law. He was asked to be godfather to many nieces and nephews. He read his bible and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

He worked for the Crow Tribe in several capacities; Abandoned Mine Lands, Buffalo Pasture and worked as security for elections. He also worked as a ranch hand for several ranches on the Crow Reservation.  He enjoyed the branding and shipping season. He was always asked to assist by the local ranchers.

He was preceded in death by his mother Iris Eagle Horse-Morin, adopted mother Philamine, sisters Emeri Little Owl and Desiree Old Coyote. Brothers Joseph Phares and Newlyn Little Owl. Grandparents William and Agnes Ceasley Little Owl. Uncles Ettinge, Jr., Xavier, Larry, Sr. and Cyrus Little Owl, Delbert, Bryan, and Kevin Eagle Horse. Aunts Hazel Not Afraid, Adelia Stewart, Darlene Hugs, Lucy Little Owl, Lauren Spint and Judy Morin of North Dakota.

He is survived by his father, Thomas (Linda), sisters Quinlyn, Bridgette, Laura, Reva and Lavonna Little Owl, Sherri (Mark) Farwell, and Autumn Azure of ND. Brothers Colt and Tomray, Thomas Old Coyote, Ray Bulltail, Larry, Jr., Larny, Solomon (Kacy), Dominic (Nevesa) Little Owl, and Daryl (Amanda) Big Hair. Aunts Nora (Dennis) Big Hair, Virginia He Does It, Barbara Medicine Horse, Linda Mae and Harriet Little Owl and Mary Ruth McDougal of Canada. Uncle Dennis Eagle Horse of Lower Brule, SD. Families include He Does It, Bell Rock, Birdhat, Beaumont, Bullinsight, Carpenters, Jefferson, Pickett, Hunts the Arrow, Ceasley, Half, Reed, Plain Feather, Bull Over Hill, Holds the Enemy, Walks, Eagle Horse of SD and Beebee, Healey, Ceasley, Tallow, Day Chief and McDougal of Standoff, Alberta, Canada.

A Rosary will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 4, 2023, at the Bullis Chapel in Hardin.  A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 5, 2023, at the Bullis Chapel in Hardin.  The Rite of Committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Hardin.  Condolences may be shared at www.bullismortuary.com.
