Calvin Scott Birdinground Sr.

Calvin Scott Birdinground, Sr., 74 of Garryowen went to the other side camp on July 28, 2024 at St. Vincent Hospital.

Báakaan Daaxpiitché (Bear Above) was born Sept. 1, 1949 in Crow Agency to Sampson, Jr. and Thelma Shane Birdinground. He was a member of the Ties the Bundle Clan, a Bad War deed clan chid. His Indian name was given to him by Richard Day Light.

He was raised in the Garryowen area and received his education in Crow Agency, and Lodge Grass. He later attended and graduated from Sheridan Haskell, Montana State University and Little Big Horn Colleges, and went to work for the B.I.A. Range Management department as a Bio-Technician. As well as worked for US Fish and Wildlife in Lewistown and a care taker at Crow’s Vet Park.

He enjoyed playing independent basketball (Garryowen Mustangs), working outdoors, training race horses, winning stake races at Crow Fair, an avid hunter and fisherman, making dry meat, catering for various events, arrow throwing (throwing the winning point for the Reno district) and was a dedicated Lodge Grass Indian fan.

He had a wealth of friends, a wonderful sense of humor, and was known for being a kind hearted, compassionate and generous man and great storyteller to all who knew him. He loved all his nieces and nephews like they were his own children.

Preceded in death by: his parents; his wife Alpha; his brothers Sampson, III and Isaac Birdinground, Alvin Not Afraid, Sampson Scott, Karla, Uttakkat, Nicole and Victor Costa, Jr.

Survivors include: Shonna (Verdell) Collins, Darrin (Bobbi Jo) Old Coyote, Tonia Rides Horse, Jay (Misty) Old Coyote, Calvin, Jr. (Blossom) Birdinground. Grand kids: T.J., Colton, Skylar, Rowdy Collins, Alvie, Evelyn, Jace, Heaven, McKaylee, Olivia, Amy Old Coyote, Charine (Ashton) Old Elk, Ervin, Aaliyah, Cyrilla, Rebecca, Noah Rides Horse, Nash, Dóhe, Kyle, Cody, Ethan Birdinground, Cedar Little Swallow. Great-grand kids: Cameila and Cashton Old Elk. Nieces and nephews: Karen (Dana) Goes Ahead, Victor (Becky), Garret (Christina) Costa, Lisa (Tody) Left Hand, Eric (Casey), Gina (Alex) Reed, Isaac, Jr. Birdinground, Christopher, Lauren (Roy) Rides Horse, Matthew (Amanda), Scott (Salone) Flat Lip. Sisters: Janet Costa, Jennifer Flat Lip and Marla Fritzler. Brothers: Clarence Three Irons, Ron Skates, Lloyd (Alvina) Pickett. Good friends: Carlton Big Man, Kenneth Spotted, Harrison Old Elk, Cliffton Big Man. Uncle: Clifford (Ardith Birdinground. Aunt: Laura Pickett.
