Curtis Rides Horse Obituary

Curtis Marvin Rides Horse, Sr., aka Slash, 67 of Hardin, went home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 4, 2024 at the Billings Clinic Hospital. “Cree” was born September 18, 1957 in Crow Agency, a son of Laurel Phyllis Well Known and Lewis Rides Horse, later raised by Pearl Big Man Morrison. Curtis was a member of the Piegan Clan and a child of the Big Lodge Clan.

Slash grew up at the Big Man Ranch in Crow Agency. He received his early education from St. Xavier Mission School and later attended St. Labre Indian School. After receiving his GED he joined the United States Army Montana National Guard in 1981. While in the military he received recognition for his marksmanship skills. Curtis was honorably discharged in 1983.

In his younger years he worked as a Jailer then became a Police Officer at the age of 16. He later attended Marana Indian Police Academy in Marana, AZ in 1989. He worked as a Fire Fighter, Highway Construction Worker, contracting with his brother Art Alden in the early 80’s wiring the Lodge Grass and Lame Deer Clinics and the old Tribal building. Curtis also worked with Don Boyer in the 90's and was a ranch hand for Wilcutt in Fort Smith. He later worked for the Crow Tribe as a Buffalo Ranger for several years.

He was very active and enjoyed riding horses, hunting, fishing, and being outdoors, but his memorable moments were at the mountains when he was with his brothers, sons and nephews. On one adventure he was shot accidentally in the hip while hunting in the Big Horn Mountains. Curtis remained strong during the six and a half hour evacuation to Lodge Grass. On another hunt he shot and killed 29 elk at one time while he was hired by the Lodge Grass Baptist Church to distribute elk meat to families in need of food during the floods of 1978. He was also a member of the Crow Search and Rescue team and was called upon when needed.

Slash had a great love for his family and friends, but his grandchildren were his love and joy. He was a doctor of motors, electrician, plumber, carpenter, a Jack-Of-All-Trades, there was nothing that he couldn’t do. Curtis was a loving and kindhearted man.

Those who preceded Curtis in death were his parents; children Cassaundra Heaven Leigh, Aaron Uriah, Hannah Rose Rides Horse, Nephi LeGrand House, Teddy Little Light; brothers Rodney Well Known, Carey Grant Rides Horse, Alvin Morrison, III, Edgar Alden and sister Loretta Well Known.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Samantha; their children Colt, CurtisLyn, Isaiah (Kellie) and Marvina Rides Horse; his sons Ronald, Curtis, Jr., Cameron, Chase Rides Horse; his daughters Terri, Tamera, Marina, Christy and Trista Rides Horse; he raised Tonnie (Steven Schwend) Pisano, Walter Runs Above Alexia and Laurel Nomee and Mason Hugs as his own; his sisters Colleen, Gail, Roxanne Well Known and Lois Marie Rides Horse; his brothers Art Alden, Stanford and Roy Rides Horse; 64 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as members of his extended family including the children of Alvin Morrison, Big Man, Morning, Dawes, Jackson, Dancing Bull, Smith, Myers, Halls, Waters, Lone Bear, Wolf and Wooden Legs.
