Darrell Lind Fighter Little Light, of Crow Agency Montana, went to the other side camp July 24, 2025 at the Awekulaawache Care Center where he was a resident the past few years. He was born November 28, 1967 in Crow Agency to Biological mother Sylvia Marie Fighter. His Apsaalooke name is Baapaaxe Iasse (Watches the Flag). He was a member of the Greasy Mouth Clan and a child of the Whistling Water Clan. He was also a proud member of the Big Horn District.
He grew up at his family ranch in St. Xavier Mt. with his parents Robert Little Light and Mary Lucy Fighter Little Light. He was raised in the traditional ways of the Sweat Lodge, Sundance, fasting and the Catholic beliefs. He liked playing Handgames or watching his family members play. He loved to ride horses with his brothers and sisters riding to his Fighter grandparents homestead up the road towards Ft. Smith. He enjoyed telling stories to his children about his many adventures with his brother Miles, Lamont, Larry Big Hair, Randy, Darr and Jr. Three Irons enjoying the country life in the St. X area from dawn to dusk eating from apple trees, plums and wild berries along the river and ditch banks. Often riding to the rodeo grounds during the annual Fourth of July Rodeo that was held in the St. Xavier area.
In his early childhood he attended school at the St. Xavier Mission boarding school. Later he attended Ft. Smith school. He moved to Crow Agency in 1980 and also attended school in Hardin. During his high school years he attended several schools including Lodge Grass, St. Labre and Chemawa boarding school in Oregon. He participated in Football and Basketball throughout grade school and into high school. He enjoyed playing basketball into his adult life in the city league with local teams often traveling out of town for tournaments. He was a very active individual who enjoyed hunting, fishing and taking his family out to Ft. Smith to visit. He had many stories of riding horseback in the mountains hunting elk, fishing in the creeks and enjoying coffee by the camp fire. He was never one to sit around; he was always outside, breaking a horse, riding a horse, fixing his fishing pole or getting his pack ready to go back up the mountain. Darrell has gained many friends throughout his life, never to say no to anyone who would ask for his help, always saying, “You Bet!” During Crow Fair you would see him in his fine regalia parading and winning many times with the beautiful warbonnet his father had made, riding his parade horse Roy. A photo of Darrell was even on a post card with his winning regalia that he was so proud of and would often bring out to show family and friends.
He was employed by the local pig farm near Hardin for many years and later on for the Crow Tribal AML. His passion was to be on a horse riding around Crow Country helping anyone in need of ranch hands or an annual branding. He was also a participant in the annual Real Bird re-enactment for many years.
