Ferrell Jay “Big Man” White Hip, 70, of Crow Agency, Montana, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Billings Clinic, surrounded by loved ones.
Ferrell was born November 22, 1955, in Crow Agency to Arthur and Hannah (Morrison-Alden) Big Man. Ferrell was a Greasy Mouth and a child of the Piegan. She was raised in St. Xavier and attended school at St. Xavier Mission. She later attended Fort Sill Indian School. She remained deeply rooted in her community and family throughout her life. Ferrell married Al White Hip Oct. 10, 1986, in Hardin and the couple made their home in Crow Agency, MT.
She was a devoted mother, proud grandmother, and loving great- grandmother. Ferrell was especially proud of raising her granddaughter, Johanna Big Man, whom she loved dearly and cared for as her own. Her family was her greatest pride, and she cherished every moment spent with her children and grandchildren. Ferrell was known as a loyal friend and a helper to many. She carried a generous spirit and was always willing to lend a hand or offer support. She enjoyed making plastic canvas and yarn crafts, creating beautiful handmade pieces for those she loved. She also enjoyed visiting with family and friends and loved to gamble, which brought her laughter and time spent with others.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Al White Hip; her daughter, Johanna White Hip; her parents, Arthur and Hannah Big Man; her paternal grandparents, Max and Cordelia (Spotted Tail) Big Man; and her maternal grandparents, Fred Alden and Maude (Prairie Bird) Sr. She was also preceded in death by her sisters Jocelyn Big Man and Susan Alden Red Star; her brothers Ben Big Man, Thomas “Tim” Big Man, Fred Alden III, and Gary Plenty Buffalo Sr.; her uncle Fred (Ruth House) Alden Jr.; her grandparents Jo (Ruth Backbone) Alden Sr., and Patsy Little Light; and her nephews Travis and Timothy Big Man.
She is survived by her son, Frederick Max Big Man (Flora Dewey); her granddaughter, Johanna Big Man, whom she raised; and her great-granddaughter, Luna Rae. Grandsons Daniel Big Man and Elmer Hill. She is also survived by her brothers Alden “Poncho” Big Man Sr., Pat (Carol), Aaron (Martha), and Leon (Mary) Alden; and her sisters Marie (Buddy) Rogers, Cordelia (Garydean) Little Light, Colleen Black Eagle, Sandra Grant, Jana Alden, and Nita Big Man. Aunts Beverly Big Man, Dorcella Little Light; her dear friends, she took as sisters — Barbara Susan and Margaret Gail, known lovingly together as “The Golden Girls” — along with extended family from the Lone Bear, Alden, Bear Quiver, Morrison, Big Day, Yarlott, Walks, Kows the Ground, Snell, Dancing Bull, Hugs, Jackson, Morning, Goes Ahead, DeCrane, Plain Bull, Red Wolf, Laforge, Iron, Bear Cloud, Carpenter, Old Horn, Bear Crane, Brown, and Ten Bear families.
Ferrell will be remembered for her strength, kindness, laughter, and deep love for her family. Her legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those whose lives she touched.
