Garrett Dean Door Sr., 68, of Crow Agency, MT died August 6, 2024 in Tucson, AZ. He was born June 9, 1957 in Crow Agency, a son to James and Elizabeth (Spotted) Door, Sr. Baapè itchiliash “Good Day” was his Indian name, given to him by the late Maria Long Tail. Garrett was a member of the Big Lodge clan and child of the Bad War Deeds clan. He received his education at Hardin and Pryor High School, where he played basketball and ran track. He later attended Dawson Community College in Glendive, MT.
Garrett participated in many Sun Dances, the Native American Church and sweat lodge ceremonies. He was an all around cowboy; he didn’t fear anything. He was a champion jockey, bareback rider and bull rider. Garrett had a favorite horse named “Dyna Cat.” He last jockeyed for the late Howard Shane in 2006. Eventually, due to his expertise and respect among the Crow horsemen, he was elected Crow Fair Racing Commissioner. He also was a part of the Big Horn District Arrow Throwing.
Garrett had various jobs in the area, and worked for many different ranches. If anyone needed to find Garrett, they always checked the barns in Crow first because that’s where he would be most of the time, day or night.
Garrett was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and James Door, son, Jarvis James Door, siblings, Donald, Garland Sr., Marvett, Maude Door, Raymond Jr., Collins, Minerva, Cheryl Big Day, Lynette Not Afraid, Ada, Raymond, Vicky, Leroy White, Joseph Bear Cloud, Buster Leider, Harriett Little Owl, Meta Stewart, Alphonso Smells and Susanna Three Irons, and best friends Edward Real Bird and Gene Dreamer.
