Gloria Good Luck Obituary

Our matriarch and beloved mother, Gloria Patricia Driftwood Good Luck, 87, of Lodge Grass, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 13, 2024. Her Indian name Balapuuxe heelen balaxish (She who Sings in the Aspens) was given to her after a celebration of her birth in Crow Agency, Montana on November 12, 1936 by her Grandfather in accordance with Apsaalooke culture and tradition to commemorate her future life with the Apsaalooke People.  She was blessed to be surrounded by a large family from her parents, Mary Fights Well Known and Harvey Driftwood. It was their hope, wishes and prayers she may faithfully carry out the Creator’s will and be healthy to learn and live and contribute to the beliefs, values and existence of Apsaalooke society  and culture. She belonged to the Greasy Mouth clan and was a child of the Whistling Water.  A clan system based on a matrilineal system was very important to Gloria.  Gloria was the personification of those wishes and prayers. While growing up Gloria was well known as a traditional Crow Woman in all aspects of her life. She was raised by John (Polly Greybull) Cummins and grew up in the Lodge Grass area.

Gloria married Aloysious Good Luck in December of 1953.  The couple made their home in Lodge Grass, where they raised their children.  She began her education at St. Ann’s Catholic School and continued on to receive her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Montana Colleges.  She taught at Crow Tribe Headstart, Lodge Grass schools and Little Big Horn College adult education.  After 34 years of teaching, she retired.  Because of her strong work ethic, she returned back to the workforce, working at the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Crow Tribal Enrollment Department.

In her earlier years, Gloria and Al upheld their traditional beliefs, attending Pow-wows, handgames, sundances and Tobacco Society events.  A member of the Night Hawk Society and Tobacco Society, she was a rightful owner to sing backup, and was most proud to be a best hider champion.

Gloria is a true definition of “a virtuous woman.”  She had a heart of gold always looking out for her family instilling wisdom, strength and hope.  She was a prayer warrior and a member of El Bethel Church of Lodge Grass.  She lived a blessed life and often shared her memories with her grandchildren.  She enjoyed beading, exercising, reading her Bible, spending time with family, playing board games with grandchildren, doing crossword puzzles and coloring.  She was a proud Bobcat alumni and Lodge Grass Indian fan.  Her greatest memories were watching her sons make State.  She was proud of all her family and was often called upon to gift Indian names.

Her husband of 53 years, Al, her parents, adopted parents Samuel (Adeline) Plain Feather, son Al Good Luck Jr., daughters, Alfredine, Alverna, Magdalene, and Mary Althea, sisters, Deborah Yarlott, Gwendolyn Falls Down and Anna Hill and a granddaughter Ashley Dawes preceded her in death.
