John "Jerry" Butkay Obituary

John Gerald "Jerry" Butkay, of Hardin, Montana, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones. Jerry was born on March 20, 1938, in Sarpy, MT, to John and Florence Butkay. From a young age, he was known for his kind heart, easygoing nature, and sense of humor. Jerry had a special way of bringing laughter to those around him and will always be remembered for his famous "little Johnny jokes" that could make anyone smile. His good-natured wit and genuine warmth left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Jerry attended St. Xavier Catholic Mission School from the age of five until he was eight years old and completed his education at Bridger High School in Bridger, Montana. After graduating, he proudly served in the United States Army as a United States Paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division beginning in 1956. During his service, Jerry earned several military decorations, including the Marksman (Rifle) Medal, the Parachutist Badge, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1958. A proud veteran, Jerry deeply valued his time in the service and enjoyed sharing his experiences and stories with his family, as well as visiting classrooms to speak with students during Veterans Day celebrations.

Throughout his life, Jerry worked in many trades and professions, reflecting his strong work ethic and dedication. He often spoke fondly about helping in the construction of the Yellowtail Dam and his years of work at the Fertilizer Plant, where he formed lifelong friendships throughout the community. Jerry also enjoyed elk hunting with his close friends Dick Struck, Bob Harlan, Bob Kehler, and Jeff Dresch, cherishing the camaraderie and time spent outdoors. He had a deep love for sports, both watching and playing, and he especially enjoyed cheering on his children and grandchildren as they competed and grew.

After returning from the Army, Jerry met his loving wife, Neita Mae Torske, and together they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage, a true testament to the power of faith, devotion, and unconditional love. He is survived by his devoted wife, Neita Mae (Torske) Butkay, and his sister, Kay O'Donnell. Jerry and Neita's three children include Tanya (Jeff) Anderson, Teri (Carson) Buffington, and Tim (Sherry) Butkay. He was a proud grandfather to Steven Belden, Josh (Sofia) Anderson, Tanner (Sarah) Butkay, Jana (Travis) Bruce, Todd (Jessica) Butkay, Josh (Beth) Harlan, Samantha (Jason) Link, Sarah (Lucky) Xiong, Jessica (Dan) Peoples, and Abby (Cody) Cesarz. The story of his life continues through his 25 cherished great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, each of whom he loved to play and joke with, bringing laughter and light wherever he was. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, John and Florence Butkay, and his sisters, Bev Pulver and Glory Bigelow. Jerry will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family and his great sense of humor. He had a joyful spirit and a gift for making others smile, finding joy in life's simple moments, such as watching his family grow and sharing laughter around the dinner table.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Anna Hein for her compassion and dedication to Jerry's healthcare. He was very fond of her and greatly appreciated her kindness and sense of humor. The family also wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to all of Jerry’s friends whose kindness, laughter, and companionship enriched his life through the years.
