Lawrence “Larry” Edward Pretty Weasel, Sr., 84, of Crow Agency passed away suddenly in his family home on September 3, 2023. Larry was born March 21, 1939, to Leonard Pretty Weasel and Faye Walking Bear in Crow Agency. Poopáhtaxiassaash (Plain Owl) was a member of the Greasy Mouth clan and a Child of Ties the Bundle.
Larry was blessed with family that loved him and raised him from infancy to adulthood. After his father joined the military, he and his siblings moved to Lodge Grass with their mother and grandfather, White Arm. His father’s parents, Owen and Bessie (Shane) Pretty Weasel took him in and raised him as a son and he became a brother to their children.
On December 2, 1958, Larry married Agnes Goes Ahead, and they made their home in Crow Agency where they raised their children and grandchildren. Larry loved his children, but his grandchildren held his heart and was always happy to spend as much time as he could with them. Larry and Agnes’ home was a home filled with love, good food, and cherished memories. You were always welcomed and often would be greeted as he was reading the daily newspaper, solving a crossword puzzle or sudoku.
Larry attended Crow Elementary and Hardin High School, graduating in 1958 after an incredible athletic career that is still talked about to this day.
His legend grew, and the nickname “The Legend” stuck after his induction into the inaugural Montana Athletes’ Hall of Fame in 1993. Larry was also inducted into the inaugural MontanaIndian athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. He displayed incredible talent, but he will attribute his work ethic to his success. Larry often told his grandchildren that if they worked hard enough, they could be better than he was. He shared many stories of his basketball games, but he hardly spoke of himself. Larry’s stories were very detailed, and he remembered every player’s name, many of whom became lifelong friends. His name is still well known across the country, as numerous stories of individuals being asked if they knew who Larry was, even in the Vietnam War.
Larry was an accurate arrow thrower, winning many tournaments and trophies. He was an avid horseman who still operated his horse ranch up until his passing. Larry owned and trained flat track racehorses which led to sponsoring Indian Relay teams ran by his grandsons. Larry was a farrier into his 80s and his work spoke for itself with his perfectionist tendencies and his attention to detail. Larry was a caretaker of many individuals, he would often deliver fruit to the nursing home, and always made time to visit with people he encountered. He spent countless hours visiting on the phone, including daily visits with friends and family. Larry enjoyed teasing his sister-in-law’s, his teasing clan, and would often ruffle up his grandchildren.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents; children Gregory Pretty Weasel and Lisa Pretty Weasel-Frost; grandchildren Tassey Robinson and Barbeth Real Bird; grandparents Owen and Bessie Shane Pretty Weasel, Paul Williamson and Tillie Walking Bear; brothers Lamont and Leon Pretty Weasel, Leland Walking Bear, Kenneth and Mike Iron; sisters Lenora Pretty Weasel, Miriam and Gail Iron; adopted brothers Garland and David “Pistol” Plenty Hoops; adopted sisters Ella Plenty Hawk, and Cheryl Plenty Hoops; adopted mother Pearl Hogan.
