Obituary

Leland Winston Stewart, 66, of Billings, Montana went home on October 16, 2021 in Great Falls, Montana. Leland was born March 10, 1955 in Crow Agency the son of Benito Stewart and Dora Old Elk. He was a member of the Greasy Mouth and a child of the Greasy Mouth. He was a member of the High Hawk Society. His Indian name was Ichíilaakinee Isítcheesh (Likes to Ride Horses).


Leland was raised in the Garryowen area by Dora and Lewis Rides Horse and Owen and Katie Pretty Weasel. He attended high school at St. Labre graduating in 1974. He attended Dull Knife Memorial College in Lame Deer and received his certificate in carpentry. He then enrolled at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico and graduated with his Bachelor of Arts in 1976.


He married Edith “Baby Rae” Writing Bird and the couple had three children, Leilani, Winston and Bryan. The couple later divorced.


Leland was a visionary artist. His work has been exhibited in many juried art shows. Leland was a diverse artist and worked in many mediums including pottery, photography, ceramics, painting and designing and beading regalia for his family members. Leland was a traditional man participating in Sundance and sweat lodge ceremonies. He was an accomplished chef and enjoyed preparing exotic foods even delicacies like alligator, he was a master with spices and his cajun food was a treat for his family and friends.


Leland was an awesome man, a great dad and grandfather. He was always there for his family and would drop whatever he was doing if his grandchildren needed him. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and was a willing babysitter.


He is preceded in death by his parents Dora and Lewis Rides Horse and Owen and Katie Pretty Weasel and his brothers Gerald and Ronald Stewart.


He is survived by his children Leilani, Winston (Amy) and Bryan Stewart; his grandchildren Austin Stewart, Creedence, Paul and Elizabeth Blackbear, Marley, JayThomas, Winston Jr., Lia, Wylie and Kamryn Stewart and great grandchild Kiowa Blackbear; his brothers Joseph and Wesley Stewart, Stanford, Kerry Grant, Roy Rides Horse; sisters Juanita Stewart and Lois Marie Rides Horse, Delora Old Elk, Grace Kellum and Theodean (Elias) Hugs.
