Lorraine Kuntz Obituary

Lorraine Kuntz, 90, of Hardin passed away peacefully on January 19,2024 at her home. Lorraine was born June 12, 1933 along with her twin sister Loretta in Hettinger, ND to Bernard and Frances (Jacobs) Slater.  She and twin sister Loretta were inseparable and were the best of friends growing up in a family of twelve siblings known as the “Duck Creek Dozen”.

Lorraine graduated from Hettinger High School in 1951. Lorraine, twin sister Loretta, and sister Agnes   attended St. Joseph Hospital school of nursing in Dickinson, ND. The three were the best of friends and lived together in their first apartment in Dickinson.  Loretta had one son, Steven whom Lorraine always called her half son because of the twin connection.

Lorraine met Micheal Kuntz and they married October 26, 1954 in Dickinson, ND. They started their home in Regent, ND on the Kuntz family farm and later moved to Montana. They celebrated almost 60 years of married life until Mike passed away in February 2014.  Blessed to this union were six children.

Mom and Dad raised us kids with a high value of work ethic and to be self-sufficient. In her young married life, Lorraine loved to sew and knit, sewing us girls matching clothes and knitting sweaters for our dad. Mom accepted a job with Big Horn County Memorial Hospital where she worked for over 50 Years as a licensed practical nurse.  She worked selflessly and made many sacrifices during her tenure working at the hospital. Her true purpose was being a nurse, she loved taking care of people.

Lorraine’s passion was collecting antiques. She and Dad loved going to estate/auction sales and her collections today represent many items she remembered from her childhood on the family farm. Her most cherished collections were roosters, crocks, antiques, beanie babies and barbie dolls. Her second passion was her yard, and she planted flowers in about any pot she could find. She truly took pride on how beautiful her yard was. Lorraine also loved decorating her home.  Every room in her house had a color scheme as well as a theme.  She also loved clothes and holidays. Her favorite holiday was the 4th of July and she had quite a collection of red, white and blue. She had an outfit for any occasion as well as décor.  Christmas was one of her other favorites. She would get everyone a present and loved shopping for gifts. You were always amazed on the gift you would get from Grandma Kuntz. She truly loved her family and spending time with us. She also had a fascination with roosters, sunflowers, wolves and eagles.

Lorraine’s caring nature carried on for years caring for her neighbors, Bonnie & Lawrence Vandersloot and special friend and companion Bob Wagnitz.

Lorraine was a faithful member of St. Joseph’s Church in Hardin. She was a devoted mother and grandmother leaving behind 12 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Our family would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Karmyn Elliot for her help and compassionate caring for our mom.  She was Mom’s co-worker and friend for many years and helped with her care until the end. She certainly was our family’s angel.

Thank you to Dr. Quanbeck and the wonderful people at Stillwater Hospice.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, 5 brothers, 3 sisters, her husband Mike, son Leslie, and close friend and companion Bob Wagnitz.
