Manuel Covers Up Sr.

Manuel Covers Up Sr. made his journey to the other side camp on October 16th surrounded by his loved ones, Deaxkaash Aahxpaalookoosh “Hangs Out With Eagles” a name given to him by Frank Covers Up was born on January 22, 1950 to the late Henry Rides Horse Sr. & Marie Covers Up, Manuel was born into the Piegan clan and a child of the Greasy Mouth/Sore Lip. He was a descendant of Chief Pretty Eagle and member of the Catholic Church also a devoted member to the Native American Church.

Manuel grew up in the Wyola and No Water area where he attended school then later graduated from Lodge Grass High school. He then went on to attend Haskell Indian Junior College in Lawrence Kansas receiving his degree in auto mechanics.

Manuel worked for the Lawrence Kansas Police force from 1972-1974, while working in the line of duty he met his good friend Dusty Ryder, who later became his brother. In 1975, Manuel worked in Billings, MT at the U.S postal warehouse then later worked his way up to become a Postmaster in Lodge Grass, MT where he retired in 2002. Shortly after retiring he was a senator for the Legislative Branch for the Valley of The Chiefs District from 2002-2006, also being a speaker of the house during that term.

Manuel enjoyed Native American Church as he always mentioned that “There is no distance in Prayer”.  His precious moments was setting a tipi up on the Big Horn Mountain and praying in a Peyote Ceremony for the Big Horn Mountains including The Crow Nation.

Manuel gave many Indian names to grandkids/great grand kids, nieces, nephews, relatives as well as offering prayers for those in need. He continued to put up Peyote meetings in the Big Horn Mountains for number of years, Manuel was a kind humble giving man who had a loving heart for anyone who crossed his path.

Manuel is preceded in death by his parents: Henry Rides Horse and Marie Covers Up, His Sons: Manuel Jr, Marty Paul Cover Up, Thomas Russell, & Curtis Bad Bear. His Sisters: Marlene Rides Horse, Margaret “Tina” Covers Up, Billy Jean Old Bull, Sarahvene Jefferson, Alpha Birdinground, Jennie Big Day, Tana Stewart, Ursula Bad Horse, Bonnie White Horse. His Brothers; Bernard “Buzzy” Covers Up Lawerence Sr., Benny and Frank Old Bull, Paul J Bad Horse Jr. Felix and Woodson Bird Faraway, Dawn & Chester Medicine Crow, Nieces/Nephews: Malorie Covers Up, Kathy & Edwina Don’t Mix, Ursula & Vanessa Gardner, Edmund Old Crow, Edgar, Greg, Elvis, Lawrence & Myron Old Bull, and Byron Dawes III, Grandchildren: Paul Morning, Derrick Covers Up, Monique Russell, Millie Old Crow, Muskie Gardner, & Moreas Covers Up.

Survivors Include: The love of his life Linda Covers Up. Children: Matthew and Miranda Covers Up, Trishia, Charlotte Bad Bear. Katrina Pretty Weasel, Nancy (Dominic) Old Elk.
