Marty Dale Not Afraid was born to Candace and Wayne F. Not Afraid on December 4, 1967. He passed away surrounded by family on March 12, 2026.
Marty was given the Crow name, Akawasskalaassaash, meaning One Who Never Gives Up, by Kenneth Pretty On Top. He belonged to the Whistling Water Clan and was a child of the Newly Made Lodge Clan.
Marty attended school in Lodge Grass, graduating from Lodge Grass High School in 1986. As a freshman in High School, he qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo with George Cummins in Team Roping. He attended college with rodeo scholarships to Northwest College and Dawson Community College and graduated from Dawson Community College in 1989.
Marty came from a ranching and rodeo family; he raised cattle and dedicated much of his life to ranching and rodeoing. In the Indian Rodeo circuit, he was known as one of the top tie-down ropers; he also team roped. Marty traveled throughout the United States rodeoing, where he made many friends.
Over the years, he qualified for several rodeo finals across multiple circuits in both professional and Indian rodeo associations. He was a multi-qualifier for the Indian National Rodeo in the calf roping and a qualifier in the Montana Circuit Finals.
Marty enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and was happiest when he was outdoors. He broke and trained horses and was known as an excellent horseman. One of his most recent achievements was winning the Crow Bred Futurity on his horse Kyra Loves Kate. Marty enjoyed keeping busy with his grandchildren, taking them to youth rodeos, making sure they always had horses available to use.
Marty was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and liked watching them play.
Marty married Marion Calvin in Sheridan, WY. From this union, they had 4 children, whom they raised on the family ranch in Owl Creek, outside Lodge Grass, Montana.
He is survived by his wife, Marion; his children, Cara (George), Lacey (Beau), Wyatt, and Courtney Not Afraid; adopted daughters, Mackayla and Serese (Dale) Jefferson; his mother, Candace Pease; his sisters, Kimberly Not Afraid, Julie (George) Cummins, Michelle (Alfred) Armajo, Danielle (Rick) Hyatt, April (Cameron) Toineeta, Alta (Delano) White Clay, Lisa Day Child; his brothers, Jeremy (Roxanne), Mike (Lori) Not Afraid, Franklin Cooper; his nieces and nephews, Ty (Tiffany) Birdinground, William Teeth, Erin (Austin) McCleary, Zane, Sydney, Bailey, Tanner, Myam, Baby Julie, Jessica (Johnathan), Amanda (John), Emily, Machiah (Awna), Not Afraid, Jacob Bishop, Vernice Hugs, Amica Jefferson, Rad Desjarlias, Miclo Flores, Brandon (Carmille), Braylee (Frank) Armajo, Taryn (Emery) Crooked Arm, Casey (Tana) Cummins, Tawni (Wacey) Black Eagle; and his grandchildren, Skylar, Kyra, Broden, Austyn, Kenzyn, Dylan, Dakota, Nate, Rio, Tobi, Koy, Cade, Tate, Taycee, Lainey, Rhett, Tessa, Dee, Jullian, Dale, Logan.
