Mary Elizabeth Hogan Wallace, born a twin on October 12, 1941, in Billings, MT, to George Washington Hogan and Lillian Bullshows Hogan, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2024, at the age of 82. Named in honor of her paternal aunts, Mary Takes Gun and Lizzie Yellowtail, she was raised in the Crow Agency area as a member of the Big Lodge Clan and a Child of the Whistling Water Clan. Mary Elizabeth was an active participant in the Crow Tobacco Society and the Ree Dance Society.
Mary Elizabeth held two Crow names: Ihke’leaxxa chiichiilish (“Looks for the Morning Star”), given by her aunt Lizzie Yellowtail, and Baaxaaxia Aapiia (“Abalone Necklace”), bestowed by her adoptive Tobacco Society parents, Martha and Ted Bear Cloud. She graduated from Hardin High School in 1959 and earned a degree in Administration from Butte Business College in 1965. In 1978, she graduated from Miles City Community College School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse (RN).
In 1962, Mary Elizabeth married Nelson Jay Wallace (deceased), and together they had two children: Barry Hogan, Sr. and Meredith Rose Toineeta. Mary and Nelson also raised Camee Old Chief (David, Sr.), Marty Old Horn, Curtis Singer, and Caleb Wallace (Layla) as their own. According to an old Crow custom, the late Edith Birdinground temporarily gave her infant son, Gilbert “Popcorn” Birdinground, Jr., during his weaning period to a woman she trusted with her infant, Mary Elizabeth. Popcorn and Mary enjoyed a mother/son relationship ever after. Mary’s family resided in Lodge Grass, Billings, and Hardin. Mary Elizabeth was known for playing hand games with her husband’s district, Black Lodge, and enjoyed going to casinos with family and friends.
Since 2015, Mary Elizabeth faced health challenges, spending time in hospitals and nursing homes. Now, she can sew, bead, laugh, and reunite with her beloved family on the other side of camp.
