Obituary
Randen Schoppe, Randen was born on December 5, 1981, the first of three sons to Anita and Randy Schoppe, in Sheridan, WY. Early in his life he was stricken by cerebral palsy, a condition that impacted his physical abilities, but he never allowed that to define him as a person. Randen’s passion for reading was developed in his early years with him graduating to full-length novels at the age of 5. It was his love of reading that broadened his expertise in so many topics. He literally read the entire encyclopedia one summer when he was 13 years old.
Like his brothers, Randen developed an amazing ability to memorize large quantities of information through Bible Quizzing, as they would commit to memory around 500 Bible verses each year and compete against teams around the nation. They would use that same ability to memorize statistics for football, baseball and basketball, every season, for multiple teams, and then debate the success and failure of their favorite teams.
Randen was 14 when his parents moved the family to Hardin, MT to pastor New Life Church in 1996. He was an integral part of the ministry team, helping with the youth group, kids and adult Sunday School, Bible Quizzing, puppet ministry, and Financial Peace University, and running the sound equipment when called upon.
As a child, Randen wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps in law enforcement, but because of his physical limitations he knew he wouldn’t be able to pass the physical fitness tests, so he purposed to do it a different way, by becoming an attorney with the goal of being a prosecutor. After completing his mother’s home school, he graduated from Little Bighorn College, Crow Agency in 2000, and then from the University of Montana in December 2002. In 2006 he earned his Juris Doctorate from the Valparaiso School of Law in Indiana. He returned to Hardin, passed the Montana Bar on his first attempt, then worked as a public defender in Jim Vogel’s firm for ten years, and then as a Deputy County Attorney under Jay Harris for Big Horn County for the past five years. He had announced his candidacy for Big Horn County Attorney just one week ago.
In 1999 Randen met Rochelle for the first time when she was 13, when she spent the summer in Hardin with her siblings. Their paths crossed again while Randen was attending Valparaiso, and again at the wedding of Randen’s friend in Lewiston, ID where Rochelle had moved to. Randen overcame his shyness and began his courtship of Rochelle, culminating in their marriage in Lewiston, ID on August 13, 2011. In 2016 they took Winter and Timber into their lives and have loved them as their own. In 2018 God blessed them with their son Amos Luke. In our day, if you want to know what someone’s main interests are, just look at their Facebook page. If you look at Randen’s you’ll see that almost every post are about two things - family and church. Though he loved his profession, he loved his family and the family of God most.
We will remember Randen as a kind soul, who loved people and loved God. He was a loving husband and father. He was a wonderful son and brother. He was a humble servant in so many ways as he sought to follow Jesus Christ. All his life he was a worshipper, who was not ashamed of his tremendous need of a savior.
Randen is survived by his wife Rochelle, children Timber, Winter and Amos; parents Anita and Randy Schoppe; brothers Rhett (Tamika) Schoppe, and Ryan (Danielle) Schoppe; grandfather Vic Dehner; nieces Danielle Bass, Rhema Schoppe, and Jade Spotted; nephew Asher Schoppe; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents Marion and Donna Powell and Richard and Amelia (Dehner) Schoppe.
Randen’s family is so grateful to the Lord for the time Randen was with us. We greatly appreciate the kindness and love shown to us in this difficult time by our community, friends, and the Body of Christ around the world.
