Richard R. "Dick" Salyer was born April 27th, 1941 and passed away peacefully just after sunrise on the morning of February 29th, 2024.
He was the son of H.R. and Wanda Salyer. Dick attended Hardin High School, graduating with the Class of '59. He then attended Eastern Montana College, graduating in 1964 with a degree in History, Science, and Physical Education. Dick loved the sport of baseball and was an avid Dodgers fan. He was proud of the fact that he once hit a foul ball off of Dave McNalley, who later went on to pitch for the Baltimore Orioles.
In the summer of 1964 he joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Ord, CA and Fort Lewis, WA. After discharging from the Army he taught at Hinsdale, MT for a number of years before moving home to Hardin, MT where he continued to teach until his retirement.
Being the entrepreneur that he was, Dick then opened "The Daily Grind" coffee shop, the first “stand” coffee shop in Hardin, MT. A few years later started “Salyer Lawn Care, Tree Service, & Mosquito Control”. He continued running the mosquito control portion of the business, finishing out his final successful season at summers end of 2023.
Dick was a giving and caring son to his mom and dad; grandson to Pearl and Lloyd Snyder, and Orlando and Neola Salyer; brother to Bill and Jim, and his wife Tris; uncle to Jimmy, Joe, and John, and his wife Becky; classmate to the class of '59; friend to all who knew him; teacher to all of his wonderful students; a silent doer of good deeds all around Big Horn County, and last but not least, a caretaker of his beloved dog and best friend Cassius.
Dick had a witty sense of humor, and the gift of gab and loved visiting with “literally everyone” in the Hardin community. Folks, after having had a conversation with Dick, would walk away feeling like they’d made a friend for life, and most likely they had. Dick led a good life and is thankful for the memories.
Honoring Dick’s final wishes - no services are planned as Dick didn't want anyone taking part of a day off from work, and didn't want to pay for a lunch afterward.
Any memorial funds received are to be distributed to the Big Horn County Museum or to the City of Hardin to be spent solely on maple trees for the boulevards.
GRAVESIDE SERVICES SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 28, 2024 at 11:00 AM at FAIRVIEW CEMETERY
