Scott Jeffers Obituary

Winfield Scott Jeffers, age 85, went to be with the Lord on January 10, 2026 after having a heart attack the day before.  Scott was born on October 10, 1940 to Winfield Wright Jeffers and Justine Edith Stephenson Jeffers in Sheridan, Wyoming.  He was the third of five children and grew up on his parents’ ranch near Lodge Grass, Montana.

He went to school in Lodge Grass, where he met his future wife, Judy Wiley.  After high school, he lived with Uncle Hank and Aunt Donna Redmond while attending Junior College in Salinas, CA.  Then he married Judy on September 11, 1963 and they immediately started driving to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA, pulling a horse trailer with two horses.  He attended horse shoeing school there and graduated in 1964 with an AG degree.

After college, Scott and Judy came back to live and work on the ranch, where they raised their three kids.  During those years, Scott trained horses, roped calves at many rodeos around the area, and was the 4-H horse leader.  He built an indoor arena, where many pleasant hours were spent roping with family, friends, and neighbors.  The kids were blessed to ride amazing well-trained horses for fun, work, 4-H, and rodeo.  The majority of the horses Scott trained were raised by Uncle Jack Jeffers at Ten Sleep, WY.

In 1981, Scott made the decision to begin a family Bible study with Judy, the kids, and his mother, Justine.  From that grew a neighborhood Bible study and eventually Faith Baptist Church in Lodge Grass.  Scott is at home in heaven today because he responded to the Lord’s call to salvation.

In 1997, Scott started his second career as a carpet cleaner, which he did for 26 years.  Judy says, “And then thankfully the machine wore out.”  We all agree because he wouldn’t retire!

Scott is survived by his wife Judy of 62 years; his daughter, Carrie (Glenn) Mereness; grandchildren, Rebekah (Tyler) Giesbrecht and Coulter Mereness; great grandchildren, Roy Giesbrecht and Alethia Giesbrecht; daughter Ginger (Chris) Hepp; son, Cedar Jeffers; grandchildren, Trevor, Ted, and Lucy Jeffers.  He is also survived by his sisters, Theresa Thompson and Donna Lee Bishop, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law Larry Bishop; brother-in-law Ron Thompson; sister and brother-in-law Helen Rae and Elmer Haas; and brother and sister-in-law Hale and Terry Jeffers.

Donations may be made to Faith Baptist Church, PO Box 501 Lodge Grass, MT 59050 and Special K Ranch, PO Box 479, Columbus, MT 59019.
