Thomas Bulltail Obituary

Thomas James Bulltail, 26, of Lodge Grass, Montana, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2025. Thomas was a beloved father, son, grandson, brother, uncle, nephew, papa, and in law. His Crow Indian name, issaashkee issaasheishee anmaalatbeishiash — “His Horse’s Blanket has Markings” — was given to him by his late grandfather, Edmund Little Light Jr. He was a proud member of Ties the Bundle and child of Sore Lip. He was also a member of Our of Lady Loretto Catholic Church in Lodge Grass, MT. Thomas was born on December 24, 1998 in Crow Agency, MT to Josephine “Sunshine” Bulltail and Dominic Flat Mouth (both deceased) and stepmother, Sherry Not Afraid. He was lovingly raised by his Kalaa, Carol Bulltail. His godparents are Bekki Gros Ventre (deceased) and Wendall Wolf Black. He was a descendent of Goes Well and Striped Dog.

He graduated from Lodge Grass High School in 2017 with many honors. He received a scholarship through FFA, traveled to Ireland, became a certified welder while still in high school, and was recognized for traveling over 65,000 miles throughout his FFA Career as “Student who Traveled the Most Miles Award.” He participated in football, basketball, and JROTC throughout high school. He attended the Close-Up Program to Washington, D.C. and New York with Robert Martin Stuker.

Thomas had a generous spirit and deep respect for elders. Through the New Mexico Service-Learning Trip with teacher Lauren Yipper Stites, he traveled 3 years in a row to the Navajo Reservation, where he chopped and delivered firewood to elders in remote areas. In addition, he would hunt wild game and provide meat to the elders, continuing the traditional value of caring for the community through the knowledge he gained from his uncle’s Dewey and Wales – building sweat.  These acts of service, including building sweats, showed the strength of his heart and the teachings he carried.  He had the heart of a cowboy – he loved riding horses, rode steers, worked with local ranches and often helped with branding cattle. Known for his helpful spirit, he was always willing to lend a hand and never hesitated to say “I love you” to family, as well as anybody he associated with.
