Victor Yarlott, Jr. Obituary

Victor Hale (Chaps) Yarlott Jr., Bacheé iichíile héelen dáhkóosh “Man Amongst the Horses,” given by grandpa Benito Brown. Chaps was born on Super Bowl Sunday (Packers vs. Patriots), January 26, 1997, in Crow Agency, MT, to Victor Yarlott, Sr. and Adrena Old Crane, passed away July 24, 2025. He was a member of the Zion II Church. He was a Whistling Water and a child of Ties the Bundle. He was named after his namesake, Hale Jeffers, by his Grampa Aaron Yarlott Sr.

Victor, best known as “Chaps” by his family, was raised in Lodge Grass, Montana. When he was a young boy, he worked in Wyoming and stayed with Mr. John McCleary, who later adopted him as his son.

Chaps was an avid horseman and was first placed on a horse when he was in diapers. He assisted his dad with branding and pushing cows. His dad recalls asking him when he was in Head Start what he wanted to be when he grew up, he stated, “A bronc rider and a rancher.” Then his dad asked him, “What about football and basketball?”, he stated, “I already have that in my pocket.”

Growing up, Chaps was always by his dad’s side. At a young age, he accomplished tasks that were required to become a Warrior, such as killing a badger, a wolverine, a bobcat, a lynx, big horn sheep, mountain lion, pronghorn, moose, bear, and elk. He was a very good hunter and was proud to share his first kill with his Káale’s, aunties, and family.

Chaps had a heart of gold. He once asked his dad for his saddle to pawn so he could buy food for a family that was in need. He always made sure to save at least fifty dollars to share with his family.

Chaps attended school at the Pretty Eagle school in St. Xavier, MT.  While in grade school, he was Chief for the Indian Days festivities for four years straight. He excelled in sports including basketball, cross country, football, and track. He won SEACC in Jr. high for football, basketball, and cross country. Chaps was part of the traveling team “No Luv” from second grade through his senior year, coached by Richard McCormick. He participated in the Big Sky State Games in Jr. High, playing basketball, and won the gold medal with his team. In 2009/2010, he was part of the AAU Nationals team in Cross Country. The first year, he took eighteenth in the 11/12-year-old category. The second year in the 12/13-year-old category, he placed 31st overall out of 517 runners, missing it by one to be All-American.

Chaps attended high school at St. Labre Indian School. As a freshman, he made the varsity basketball team. He was a 3-time All-Conference, made it to the Divisionals tournament all 4 years of high school, and the State tournament his junior year. He participated in Cross Country all four years and made honorable mention in football.

Graduating in 2016, the same year his first child, his precious daughter, Kasey, was born. In 2023, he also welcomed his pride and joy, his son Romel. He will be truly missed by all who knew him; his legacy will live on through his siblings and children.
