Willard "Bill" Moehr Obituary

WILLARD “BILL” IRVIN MOEHR

FEBRUARY 11, 1932 – AUGUST 24, 2024

Bill Moehr, 92, of Hardin, Montana passed away in his home with his family by his side.

Bill was born to Carl Henry Moehr and Isabel Dennison Moehr at their home in Dustin, Nebraska.  He was the middle child, with four older siblings, and four younger siblings.  Bill’s dad raised big draft horses, and they drilled water wells and farmed with them near the Niobrara River in Nebraska.

When Bill was 11 years old, his mother tragically died from cancer at the age of 41 years.

Bill and some of the younger boys were put into the orphanage in Torrington Wyoming.  Vern Stull would go to the orphanage and give the boys haircuts, and that was where he and Bill met.   Vern Stull would take Bill to help him do contract haying with horses, and that was when he first met Betty, although at the time she was only about 6.  Bill didn’t like the orphanage and would run away to work on ranches in the area.  Eventually, he worked for and lived with the George and Ruby Duncan family south of Lingle Wyoming until he joined the army.

Bill served in the Army and was stationed in Europe in Austria and Germany and spent his time as a chauffeur for General Arnold.  He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal in 1955.

When Bill returned home, he worked for the Teeters Ranch south of Lingle.

Bill married Betty Lou Stull in 1958.  They soon moved to Montana, working for the Padlock Ranch and lived at the head of Muddy Creek, and then on Tullock Creek at the Perkins Place.  Later they moved to the Ottun dug out camp until 1968 when they moved to south valley, near Ft Smith, Montana and farmed for Gary Ballensky.  Finally in the fall of 1974, Bill began to work for the Krone Ranch on Soap Creek where he managed the ranch until he retired in 1999.

Bill was a good cowboy.  His greatest joys were being on a good horse and working cattle outside.  The Krone ranch offered some of the best cattle country around, with good grass, lots of creeks, and beautiful country.  It was a wonderful place for his family to grow up.  The family worked with many good cowboys including Joe Fox, Henry Reed, Joe Pharris, the Irons boys, Marty He Does It, Ivan Small and his boys, Ray Krone, Lance and Larry Krone, Dave Isaacson, as well as others too many to mention.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings—Margie, Jim, Carl, George, Jack, and Arlene; also his son—Larry; and two grandchildren—Elizabeth and Andrew Walls.

Bill is survived by his very patient and enduring partner, Bonnie Kennedy; his children—Vern (Kelly) Moehr, Sherri (Jack) Walls, Lonnie Moehr, and Marlo (Salenna) Moehr; his grandchildren—Jennie, JB, Samantha, Resha, Steven, Kadie and Kyle; his great-grandchildren—Julian, Talon, Henry, Stetson, Nessie, Clair, and Chet; his sisters—Darlene and Janie; special friends—Tony Moehr, Russell and Sandy Struck; and many other family and friends.

Bill’s Memorial with Military Honors will be held at the Fairview Cemetery in Hardin, Montana on Wednesday, September 4th at 10:00 AM
